Midnight Regrets

Feedback Received!

He wakes with a start, in the cold, in the night,

In his dream he had held her, everything had felt right,

But now as he wakes the truth comes hard and fast,

The mistakes he has made, his old ghosts from the past,

Every smile, all the laughs, every sad salty tear,

They flood into his mind, and then all becomes clear,

He whispers her name in the still lonely air,

He hopes and he longs, but she'll never be there.

Very straight forward, not all poetry needs to be so metaphoric and twisting simple rhyme very well.

The rhyming scheme in this poem just reads well. A simple but thorough poem.

The "they" in the 6th line marks a bit of a bump. Something like "Floods back" would flow easier.

Besides that, the poem captures that feeling strikingly. Good job.

I feel like the man hates himself but without knowing what he did it is hard to justify why.

"It takes two to tango"

It sounds like a lonely man's plea to me, not quite a heart broken one.

I feel if it is a poem about heartbreak, the reason why would have to be somewhere there.

Lovely flow though.

Thank you! I kind of left things vague on purpose because I kind of wanted readers to fill in the blanks themselves and maybe relate with the character. I think being lonely at nighttime is something most people can relate with.

Wow, I absolutely love this. Like another commenter wrote, this is a great example of simplicity in poetry. No crazy metaphors, no need for intense figurative language. Just images that are relatable and a story that is all too familiar.

Goddamnit that got me. The rhyme scheme is spot on. The only critique I have (if you can call it that) is that some of the imagery is played and might could do with a revamping. I still loved it though.

As someone not that experienced with poetry, I would simply like to compliment you with this Poem. You say alot of things with just a few words and you truly show emotion in it. Great work and i hope you'll post some more!

"in the night, in the cold, In his dream he had held her" repetition can be mundane sometimes, but here it provides a nice flow to the start of your poem. I always like a poem with a good opening line or lines because if you can't capture someone's attention immediately the rest of whatever you're doing may as well not exist at all. The repetition and placement of commas as breaks leads the eye of the reader, so that there's a bit of an inherent pattern to the way that this reads and I think that makes this poem all the more memorable.

Beautifully written OP!
It's straight, its simple, its incisive and it gets the message across.

Every smile, all the laughs, every sad salty tear,

I especially liked the juxtaposition there.

The fact that its so straightforward leaves little room for any other criticism. Cheers!

This poem hits hard. Simple words can carry a lot of emotion. Definitely captured the feeling of sleeping thoughts, and a longing for someone that’s unreciprocated. Love it!

The loss of the one he loved the one he cannot let escape but is never within grasp the mistake will rape his mind until the end of time. This is something whether his fault or hers I understand because I relate to this man after all I’m sitting in my own hell and roasting in a frying pan of regret and wishful thinking wishing to see her eyes look at me without tearful betrayal as she walks off with him into the mornin horizon left broken and battered yet still her I choose and no matter what can’t accept that this time I lose

I really liked this. I liked how you presented what is wanted within our dreams, but then the break into reality that things are far from that. Plus the realization of those mistakes to create the end result of never having the girl of his dreams. It has good flow and brings you into their world very well and very relatable, but also makes you take evaluation in your own life. With your finishing lines, you get a really strong sense of that loneliness and longing for someone special. Almost like wishing the dream to be real or even go back into sleep to see her again. You did a great job.

This poem is so great! The longing for someone is such a sad and true emotion. Your poem portrays it perfectly.

I found something more every time I read through it. The story is sad, regretful, longing. I’m familiar with the scene and you clearly get the idea across to the reader. My only critique would be to have it read even less like a story in the third person and more like any reader’s experience. Removing “his” and “him” could add an even more direct connection to the feeling you want to convey and the reader. See how that works if you’d like! Well done nonetheless.

Thank you so much for the feedback! I see what you mean, and I’ll definitely try that in my next piece, a first person perspective could definitely pull someone in more.

Well written. Easily relatable, pulling at the emotions of an empath. I do enjoy feeling what the author feels, and in this case, that sorrow is... Haunting.
