invest in more in rod or reel?

Saltwater

Should you spend more on a rod or reel? Im leaning towards rod, this would be for a surf rod. I need to cast far out so a better reel would make sense.

Always better reels mate, you can have amazing rods for pretty cheap these days but good reels always go pricey. Love my stradics as a good all round reel.

You still using FJs? I keep going through these new ones.

The FJ’s are a far better built reel than the FK’s

Nah have the new ones, haven't had a single problem yet. Landed a pb flatty with it.

Reel.

The materials and production methods for rods is pretty inexpensive, so the cheaper models aren't that much different from the better ones. The biggest differences are probably in ultra light gear, so the benefit in getting an expensive surf rod is pretty negligible.

However, there's a whole range of quality and tolerances for reel components, so cheap reels have poor quality bearings and gears. You'll notice the difference in a cheap reel vs a quality reel.

If you’re drowning bait the reel is more important. If you’re using artificial the rod.

Surf casting, you’ll want to spend enough to get a salt rated reel (no stradic).
