What are some ways to set up a wicket for a spin bowler?

I don't know if others are experiencing the same, but I'm finding it really hard to take wickets with a spin bowler.

I usually bowl fuller good length leg breaks, slightly outside off, for the first few deliveries and try to catch the batsman off guard with a googly, slider or top spin. But somehow, the batsman figures this out pretty easily.

I keep the CPU decide the field setting, so that could be a contributing factor.

Please share your thoughts.

First press left stick and check the bottom most detail in popped up menu, here the game tells you the weakest shot of the batsman. There you go knowing your opponent's weakness is half the battle won.

Now, lets say the game shows it is cut. So second step is setting up the field. For a batsman not so good at cutting the ball, I would have a slightly wide slip, a gully like slip, a backward point a short cover and rest of the field according to what alternatives he would like to play to a delivery meant to be cut?

Step three bowling the right balls. Ok, so we have a field to get him out if he plays cut, but how to make him do that? You need to balls that bounce enough out side off stump that force batsman to go on back foot and Play with a horizontal bat. That means you need to ball with more bounce and keep the line outside off stump and ball a shorter length.

How to set the batsman up? To set a batsman you need to stop runs first. If a batsman is hitting boundaries and rotating strike easily every 2nd or 3rd ball, you can not get him out unless he throws his wicket away. Even if you bowl the wicket taking delivery, batsman will either leave it or defend it if he is making runs comfortably. So, first stick to a line and length which troubles the batsman (see weak shot above) and keep bowling that.

Once the runs are stopped and you feel the batsman is getting restless, then is the time to strike. How? Slight Variations. If you are bowling top sping regularly, try the same line and length with Doosra/Googly or slider. If you are bowling stock delivery, try the top spin. Do not be too different or you will be exposed and batsman would be cautious.

Another method to set up: Instead of setting up your field for weak shots, set a defensive field for the strong shots and bowl accordingly. Not getting runs on his/her strength can really irritate the batter. And then slip in a bowl suited for his weak shot in between, and chips will fall in your favor.

Dude that's so helpful. Can you give some tips for fast bowlers as well please?

I used to easily get wickets in Ashes 17 by bowling a consistent line just outside the off stump then suddenly going a little wide and bowling a yorking in swinger. But in Cricket 19, AI just hits a boundary whenever he wants.

Weak shots are also apparently not working as Joe Root's weak shot is listed as "drive" but he kept driving me every other ball without a single nick or mistimed shot. They were scoring at 4 RPO even on Amateur difficulty on a green pitch with overcast conditions.

Also, what to bowl to the batsmen whose weak shots are "special shots"?

PS- Even the tailenders are able to drive the first delivery they face which I usually bowl a full outswinger.. Not getting edges is getting slowly annoying

Bowling in DBC 17 was definitely easier as the ball use to swing like crazy, then in ashes they over corrected it and then ball wasn't doing much earlier and use to swing decent only after one side was rough enough.

However, in C19 definitely the swing is more on balance side. Fast bowling setup has almost same basics as spin but you need a bit of a surprise element. Also, you need to understand if Root has 95+ skill in all shot and his Drive is 90+ but less than 95, game will show Drive as his weakest shot despite it being on a strong side in itself.

One thing I love about C19 is how the game has replicated player from their real life skills. Root does have a weakness about Drive but for that you need to bowl on a specific line of Off-Middle stump.

Analysis is big part of cricket, watch videos of real life batsman dismissals, I always get Finch out cheaply by barraging him with inswingers as real life bowlers do too.

Ok, back to fast bowlers, set up field for drives, have a short cover, have two slips. Intimidate batsman about driving and then vary length slightly with swing and see which direction batsman is more prone to not play shot. Does he go after out swing or the other, use the one he is defending. Put pressure to score or get out. Only a desperate batter will throw you his wicket.

Wow thanks a lot man! I never even thought about analysing this much. I just thought of every batsman as a generalized AI and bowled mostly everyone the same line and length and same fields.

I'm going to focus on the individual now. You've basically opened up a whole new bag of new possibilities for me holy shit. I'm so excited to try this in-game.

One final question: Even if I'm bowling a tight line(just outside off stump, no real width), the batsmen still manage to score at least one boundary every over on average. Should I let that happen in favor of a more attacking field or should I set one deep cover to protect runs? I should mention that I'm talking about when the batsmen is new(even tailenders)

You are welcome, its refreshing to share my cricketing knowledge with someone who is interested and luckily this sub is helping me find a few of you.

And to reply your question, it depends what kind of captain you are. I am highly aggressive and a good batter in game so even if run rate is over 5.5 in an ODI but ball is doing something I will keep a slip for whole 50 overs and bowl to a line all the time.

But if you feel you can make batsman suffocating by spreading the field, do it. This is just a video game and you will improve only by practicing your theories. Do your best don't copy a tried and tested tactic. The game should be about having fun how you want, right?

Also about "Special Shots" special shots are sweep, helicopter, reverse, scoop. Etc.

So you need to set up field which lures them into do something extraordinary and again stop them from making runs conventional way

Hey glad to know things are working out for you.

Keep it up!

I understood cut is something what batsman plays...

I am sorry I didnt knew you were pretty new to cricket vocabulary.

Well to sum it up when batsman swings the bat along the ground towards the off side (again apologies if i am assuming wrongly you know off and on side of the batsman, and sorry as well if i am patronizing 😔) its a drive. Batsman can also play the shot with a vertical bat straight (straight drive) and towards mid-wicket (on drive).

A hook or pull is like cut but towards on side, horizontal bat, wide swing arc and lots of power behind the contact. The only difference between the two is that in Pull you literally pull a ball bowled on the off side to the leg side.

A glance is a vertical bat shot on the on side along the hips or knee depending on the bounce. Usually targetting square of the wicket i.e. Square leg, or if its played pretty late, fine leg. Sometimes batter just use the pace and close the face of the bat totally while making the contact. And thus making the ball trickle down past keeper to hit in almost a no man zone for easy runs.

What else, umm sweep (bend knee horizontal bat towards leg side or off side if it is a reverse) we covered in special shots.

Oh yah, Loft. Well technically any shot played in the air is a loft shot but hitting a shorter ball straight back, like you do in tennis is called a loft.

I am pretty sure we covered them all.

Haha perhaps

I am an Off spinner, and for me the key has been good length off spin ball (outside off) then dossra with same length and same speed. If you mix up your speed, you are guaranteed a wicket.

Also keep in mind, if its a top order batsmen, they will be much better at batting and hard to get out.

I have had slightly better luck after following to what u/rightarmbc said.

slider yorker straight at the wickets

I think this combination shouldn't be working in theory, as a slider is a delivery that doesn't bounce as much after pitching. You need to bowl full length at least. If you really do want to bowl a yorker with a spinner, bowl a stock delivery(or any delivery) with increased flight. The batsman has a better chance of mistiming this way.
