Computer Possibly Hacked

Open | Malware

I was playing a steam game and all of a sudden my computer froze up. I could still move the mouse, but I couldn't click. Key inputs didn't work either. Then, my mouse began moving on its own rather organically. It moved in circles across my second monitor, but did not click anything. I sort of panicked and just shut down my computer because it seemed to me like a RAT.

I scanned with both malwarebytes and with hitmanpro, but nothing of significance came up (two trojans, both of which were bitcoin miners which I have had for well over a year).

For my OS, I am using Windows 10.

Any input would be much appreciated on this situation, as I'm very apprehensive of formatting my drives.

Do you have Remote Access and Assistance on?

If so, turn them both off.

Just checked the setting and yes, it was enabled. Is disabling this setting enough to protect myself for the future? Or are there other steps that I should take?

I always have this off. Personally I don’t use Remote Desktop and Assistance.

Next time it happens, you can tell if it’s a RAT by disconnecting from the internet (pull out the Ethernet)

Alright, well hopefully it doesn't happen again. I'm hoping it was just a bug, but this wishful thinking is surely motivated by the fact that I'm too lazy wipe my drives.

Just test it that way and take it from there. Usually these types of malware are detected by reputable anti malware and AV.

If it's malware, nuke it from orbit with a clean install considering malwarebytes + hitman pro couldn't find anything other then the malware you seem to want to keep. Should probably show up as "riskware" and not trojans but I don't dabble in coin mining other then BOINC so I can't really say for sure.

Sounds more like a hardware problem though, had similar problems on an older system with a failing GPU or PSU (unclear which one since swapping both resolved it, most likely PSU).

Perhaps run a stress test and see if it freeze/crash. If so, hardware problem.

One at a time first, then both at the same time. If it crashes with both at the same time, probably bad PSU.

Hardly an expert at troubleshooting problems like this so take my advice with a grain of salt. Perhaps someone else will come along with further advice.
