Probably since it's just a security update versus a feature update (Night camera mode and QR scanner) this was probably easier to push out without approval. Either way hopefully we can have some less complaining for a bit now that everyone's basically caught up.

True, but we have always waited for carriers to agree to push the update even though they were just security updates.

I think with more and more people getting unlocked phones, this might be helping to push Samsung to allow for this. When only less than maybe 1% of all phones sold are unlocked, it's easy for them to say that they will wait, but i'm hoping that the trend continues because my next phones will all be unlocked.

Just ordered my first unlocked phone. Note 10+

Same, Samsung discounts and pre order deals demand it. Carriers don't give that kinda trade in value from what I remember

Ditto, trade ins are so good I've averaged 2 a year for a couple of years. It's like half off or more each time. I'll always go unlocked thru samsung.

I wondered this myself, but I just cannot see Samsung changing course and now releasing software update independent of the carriers.

It is possible that if all this update was/is a security patch, maybe they have some sort of agreement that Samsung can release security patches independent of the carriers, but that is total speculation on my part.

200 MB seems like a lot for security update? Or is that normal?

Normal for Samsung

Tmobile unlocked firmware or unlocked sim? If unlocked straight from Samsung then try removing sim card and check for updates.

People with unlocked firmware with T-Mobile SIM are only just now getting the July update.

Had to use a different SIM to get the update. Super annoying.

So, what's new?

1
anonymous_thrill•

It seems this patch doesn't even include a fix for the Qualpwn vulnerability, so it's totally useless.

There is literally no validity whatsoever to the claims that Samsung has to go before or after mobile carriers. The incompetence of Samsung and carriers like T-Mobile is really what the issue is.

Samsung has always waited for carriers to push updates first since the s7 lineup. There was a an article online about how Samsung said they will no longer wait for major carriers to push updates due to a lot of people complaining about unlocked phones not getting updates first and having to wait. Specially since tmobile and sprint refused to push the july update. Like just today, we got the 2nd August update while most carriers are on their first update and some may not even have gotten the first one.
