The Bad-Ass Uncle in Pakistan & Other Fun Things

Help me to suss out some more information/speculation about the "bad ass uncle from Pakistan"... and then I want to tie it together with something else and then ask some questions.

1 - we first hear about the "bad ass uncle in Pakistan" in Serial in the episode of the bail hearing. It's a fact that comes presumably from Adnan's science teacher. He remembered some conversation with Adnan about the uncle from Pakistan who "can make people disappear".

2 - It's unclear if he's an uncle FROM Pakistan that lives IN the United States, or he is an uncle who lives IN Pakistan.

3 - An uncle from Pakistan who can "make people disappear" - either he's a magician, or there's something more sinister about this uncle from Pakistan... he can make people disappear in the sense of destroying them or killing them... or...

4 - ... as it's taken to mean at the bail hearing, Vicki Wash expresses a concern over Adnan fleeing to Pakistan specifically because of this - this uncle is taken to mean someone who lives in Pakistan who can bring someone to live with him in Pakistan and prevent his from being extradited back to the USA to stand trial for murder. This is presented as one of the reasons why Adnan should not be given bail, along with the idea that the ISB community will help fund and enable this passage to the bad ass uncle in Pakistan.

5 - Sarah Koening scoffs at this idea, that this would be brought up at the bail hearing, because she seems to think its islamophobic nonsense from Adnan's science teacher.

6 - Now, taking another turn... Josh remembers Jay's fear of "Adnan's people" being out to get him. He confirms to Sarah that he remembers that Jay's fear at the time of Adnan's people relates to someone of Pakistani/Middle Eastern descent. Was this the bad ass uncle? Is the bad ass uncle also the "westside hitman" ? (lol)

Now, let me tie it together with something else. I think its either Undisclosed or Bob Ruff that additionally scoffs at this idea, talking about the discrimination that Adnan faced. One of them (either UD or Ruff) talks about how silly it is to speculate that Adnan would flee to Pakistan, since he doesn't speak the language, he would know nothing about being there or living there, etc... outlandish to even think something like this is possible, or so they claim.

Well, two things that make it reasonable to believe that fleeing to Pakistan would be possible: First, Adnan's car had his passport photos in it. Recent ones. Is it possible that he was getting ready for a trip to the bad-ass uncle? And secondly the family sends Yusuf (Adnan's little brother) away to Pakistan shortly after Adnan is convicted! This is because Yusuf was being bullied in school and getting into fights because of what people were saying about his brother Adnan - so the family sends Yusuf away to Pakistan!
"He got in one little fight and Shamim got scared, she said you're moving with your bad ass uncle in Pakistan! "

So, some thoughts and speculations and questions:

  1. Yusuf was like 8 years younger than Adnan. So he's probably 11-12 when he's sent away to Pakistan. I know I'm not the only one who thinks that's pretty nuts... If Adnan would be lost in Pakistan and no be able to speak the language, how much more his little brother?! How tragic, you know? Your brother is sent to jail, and people are picking on you because of that, and instead of your parents helping you through that and comforting you, you're sent away to a foreign country to live with relatives who you hardly know. And isn't 11 or 12 years old, the time when you're going into middle school, about to hit puberty, etc, isn't that like the time when a boy more than ever needs the love and support of his parents? What kind of parents ship their son back to the old country?
  2. And seeing as that actually happened to Yusuf, isn't it plausible then to think in hindsight that Adnan could have fled to Pakistan with the blessing of his parents? And therefore isn't it plausible to think that his bail-hearing was not necessarily islamaphobic and discriminatory?
  3. Was there really a bad ass uncle? Did Yusuf live with him in Pakistan?
  4. Could this be part of the reason Tanveer became estranged from the family? It's evident that Tanveer loved Yusuf and was protective of him. They shared a room, and when the cops came to pick up Adnan, Tanveer tries to prevent Yusuf from seeing what was going on, etc. Tanveer is about 12 years old than Yusuf... What would you think of your parents sending away your youngest brother to a foreign country after you've already lost one brother to criminal incarceration? I know I'd be so pissed at my parents.

What are some of your thoughts on the Bad Ass Uncle in Pakistan who can make people disappear and possibly sending kids to go live with him?
