Is there any reason not to use a fake name for my B.net account?

I used a fake name for my Starcraft 2 beta account, and I'm thinking about whether or not I should create a new account with my real name now that my game arrived this morning.

By the way, my game arrived this morning, I'm so excited.

I called Blizzard asking the same thing because I wanted to use RealID benefits without the disadvantages, and they told me I could theoretically use a fake name, but that it would be more difficult to assist me in the future with account-related issues (i.e. hacked account, recovery, etc.) if I used a fake name because they would be unable to verify it. Damn that was a long sentence. I'm on a horse.

Did you ask what the process for recovering an account is? Do they ask you for proof of ID or something, and compare it to the account name?

Would using my real first name and the initial of my last name be a good compromise?

These questions are now diamonds.

Into a conversation with a Blizzard rep about it because I'm just some guy on the internet, but as he explained it the issue is having consistency between Blizzard identities. I personally called because I wanted to merge two accounts (because one of them had some cd-keys that I wanted to transfer to my new account) and I wouldn't have been able to do it without having the same name on both accounts. If you are using the same fake name consistently across Blizzard resources and identify yourself as fake name on the phone, you shouldn't have a problem.

My only knowledge of this comes from using it for a WoW account, in which case it is pretty common for accounts to get keylogged and stolen. I've known a few people personally that had this happen and they had to fax/send in proof of ID on the account to recover it.

I'd do what the other guy suggested though and ask a customer service rep directly what you want to know.

If you get into a really serious account stolen situation where they absolutely need to verify that you are who you say you are, then they may ask you to fax a photocopy of a photo ID.

In wow, they do ask you for proof of ID when your doing some things to your account, like recovering it. Its probably best to try to use a real name because of this.

I used a fake name personally. It gives me much more freedom to give out my real ID to pretty much anyone I want, and to me that outweighs the possiblity of "my account being hacked" xD

Forgive me but, what's the big deal about people knowing your real name? Do you have an alias that you give to strangers you meet in person? Why is this any different?

That's a good point.

I think for most people it shouldn't really be a problem, but I go out of my way to avoid people I know IRL. I don't like to leave a trail [tinfoil hat smilie]

You need it to recover a hacked account.

I don't foresee a Starcraft II account hacking uptick. I mean theres nothing there really.

If you wanted to do this, you'd just have to do it separately from your WoW account, since WoW hacked account recovery requires it.

It all comes down to if you want your RealID friends to know who you are

You might have trouble reclaiming it should it get hacked. Just guessing, though.

If there is a benefit to using your real name in the future (i.e. some new feature implemented down the road) it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get your name changed. From what I hear you need to provide legal documents of your name change to get Blizzard to update their records.

Not that this should change your mind from using a fake name.
