A new curiosity... how effective are condoms if they do not break?
I know condoms have a high success rate, but is that factoring in probability of it rupturing?
I guess I'm just curious what the realistic probability of failure (a few swimmers getting by) is if you pull out before you ejaculate and there appears to be no rupture/tear in the condom.

If there is no breakage and you put it on properly and haven't pre-cum everywhere then effectiveness is 100% as far as pregnancy goes.
With STDs it does depend on the STD, but once again for ones transmitted through seminal fluid, if used properly and with no breakages effectiveness is 100%.
Seriously, don't you learn this shit in school?
I'm off to research this but after hearing all through school (I'm 36) that you could get pregnant from precome, I fairly recently read it's almost impossible.
It's more probable than getting pregnant when using a condom correctly.
You're talking shit. At the microscopic level condoms are porous, and both sperm and STD's can get through, although the chances are very slim.
[edit] I've done some research for you - http://journals.lww.com/stdjournal/Abstract/1997/03000/An_In_Vitro_Evaluation_of_Condoms_as_Barriers_to_a.7.aspx
Please stop jumping on the bandwagon - saying that it's "obvious" that condoms are 100% effective is stupid and irresponsible.
Citation needed?
You know how tyres deflate slowly over time? Like that, except with viruses and sperm
Condoms don't have air valves.

I think you've been listening to the Pope. Never a good idea on sexual matters.
I've been listening to my friend who's just completed a biomedical science degree. The pope is wildly exaggerating, but there's a reason condoms have a 2% failure rate when used perfectly.
Thanks for the research. However, that research only covers viruses. Viruses are about 10-300 nanometers in diameter. Sperm is apx. 25,000 nanometers in diameter.
If you're serious about not "jumping on the bandwagon" then please support all of your statements or retract those that have no support.
I'm from a country where it's assumed that condoms are 100% reliable and with no major catholic influence, so I'm not sure how saying that condoms aren't 100% reliable is jumping on any bandwagon, unless it's suddenly become trendy to not assume things.
The wikipedia article for condoms says there is a 2% failure rate (in terms of pregnancy) per year for perfect condom use, but I couldn't find any scholarly articles discussing it further (most of the research I found was about either preventing virus transmission or on female condom effectiveness).
The edit was just a result of being surprised at how quickly my comment got buried, given it was just a response to mister "condoms are obviously 100% effective" that everybody seemed to love.
Safe sex is only a possibility if people keep their eyes open to the risks, and there are ALWAYS risks, although some can be mitigated.
I think the speed was related to the tone of your post combined with your lack of evidence. The 2% failure rate listed could certainly be explained by condoms breaking, which HBOXNW listed as a pre-condition to condoms being 100% effective. I know of no other cause of pregnancy while using a condom.
If you have some reason to believe that failure rate isn't caused by breaking condoms - the topic this discussion was about - I'd like to see it.
