Four basic lasers are surprisingly effective at taking down shields, so I aimed for weapons that give even more shots.
I could actually destroy the flagship missile launcher. I think that's the one thing that ensured the win.

Yeah, taking out missiles is crucial.

Over 100 attempts and it's finally the fourth try on the kestrel B that does it.
I'm not even sure what I did differently.

I remember that i had about 35 hours of game and i couldn´t win, it feels awesome to do it for the first time. Congrats!

It would be better to upgrade and get 4 shields instead of leveling up the shit outta engines
All the advice I read was that dodging was better. I've tried both and never found either to be particularly effective, especially when I got the Astronomically Low Odds achievement by being destroyed by the flagship while cloaked.
That’s true though I’d recommend upgrading oxygen at least once as it helps in slug nebula when they try to hack your oxygen system(it happens before fight and doesn’t stop till it ends) and it’s just useful if they have a lot of boarders since if a shot manages to damage it you’ll still have an extra bar so it’s not too urgent to repair(you don’t have to put two power just have the extra hitpoint for safety
The Kestrel B felt so good at suffocating boarders, but I got Lanius four times in a row so I upgraded oxygen once. It's just damaged in my screenshot.
Without cloak the extra engine is important bc rockets will screw you.
On easy he should get enough scrap to buy cloak though.
Either way the last shield or ladt two engines are generally luxuseirher way and both better depending on the situation. Getting hacking/cloak is a lot more useful.
You could always use defense drones or just shut down their weapons.
He does not have defensive drones.
