By Siege or Storm II: A Look at Attacks on Castles of Westeros (Spoilers Extended)
Recently I posted By Siege or Storm: A Look at Attacks on the Great Castles of Westeros, in which I tried to gather each assault, storming, siege against each of the 9 strongholds of the Great Houses of Westeros.
From some of the comments I thought it would be interesting to look at some of the other strongholds in Westeros that don't belong to a great house.
#Secondary Strongholds
#1.)The Hightower Massive stepped tower with a beacon on top (higher than the 700 foot wall). Labyrinthine square fortress of black stone at the foundation. Numerous theories about origin (Valyrians/Mazemakers/Deep Ones).
-
Built on Battle Isle
-
Gyles I Gardener sacked Oldtown but was unable to capture the Hightower
-
Lord Jason Hightower rebuilt the Hightower a hundred feet higher although it is unknown if this was due to assault/destruction or just improvements
-
Lord Manfred Hightower opened the gates of Oldtown sparing Oldtown/the Hightower during the War of Conquest
-
Maegor I Targaryen threatened to burn Oldtown during his reign
-
Lord Leyton Hightower currently hasn't left the Hightower in a decade and is "consulting spells" with his daughter Malora the "Mad Maid"
-
Euron Greyjoy is currently setting up for an assault on Oldtown/blood sacrifice. I would assume this would involve the Hightower/Leyton/Malora in some way
#2.)The Twins Consists of two identical stone castles standing on a margin of the Green Fork of the Trident. High curtain walls, deep moats. Water Tower in the middle.
-
The Freys have held the Crossing for about 600 years
-
Robb Stark and the armies of the north are dismayed at the prospect of assaulting the Twins in AGOT
#3.)Harrenhal One of the largest castles in Westeros, it was completed by Harren the Black at the beginning of the War of Conquest. It is built on a gigantic scale with 5 massive towers, with the shortest half again as the tallest tower in Winterfell. It is thought to be cursed.
-
Burned by Aegon I during the War of Conquest
-
Seized by Harren the Red during the reign of Aenys I
-
Maegor I marched on Harrenhal and killed its entire garrison and every person with a drop of Harroway blood
-
Ser Simon Strong surrendered the castle to Prince Daemon Targaryen early in the first Dance of the Dragons, later Aemond Targaryen and Criston Cole led an army of Greens to retake the casle, but found it abandoned
-
After the Battle of the Lakeshore, Aemond and Vhagar burned all the wooden structures in Harrenhal
-
Alys Rivers and her "dragon" take up residence in Harrenhall during the regency of Aegon III
-
House Lothston (Mad Danelle) turned to "dark arts" during the reign of Maekar Targaryen, causing their chaos and downfall
-
Shella Went yields Harrenhal to Tywin Lannister early in the War of the Five Kings
-
Ser Edmure Tully tasks Roose Bolton and Ser Helman Tallhart with taking Harrenhal for Robb Stark
-
Brave Companions turn their cloaks and hand the castle to Roose Bolton
-
Captured back from the Brave Companions by Ser Gregor Clegane
-
Jaime Lannister takes command of the garrison and grants it to Ser Bonifer Hasty and his Holy Hundred
#4.)The Dreadfort The Dreadfort is a strong fortress with high/thick walls and massive towers. Thought to be ill omened, as the Boltons supposedly keep torture champers and special rooms where they hand the flayed skins of their enemies.
-
The Boltons submitted to House Stark near the beginning of the Age of Heroes after centuries if not millenniums of fighting (although no mention if the Dreadfort was ever under attack)
-
The Dreadfort joined House Greystark in rebellion against the Starks (no mention on if the Dreadfort was involved in the submission)
-
King Harlon Stark besieged the Dreadfort for two years until the Boltons surrendered
-
Stannis Baratheon considers assaulting the Dreadfort in ADWD until Jon Snow talks him out of it
-
Old Nan and others are possibly at the Dreadfort
#5.)Maegor's Holdfast Named after King Maegor I, it is a castle within a castle with a dry moat and drawbridge, 12 foot thick walls.
-
Blood & Cheese murder Jaehaerys
-
Taken by Rhaenyra in the first Dance of the Dragons
-
Defended by Sandoq the Shadow during the regency of Aegon III
-
During the sack of King's Landing, Gregor Clegane and Armory Lorch scaled the walls of Maegor's Holdfast and slew Elia Martell and at least one of her children
-
Possibly taken by fAegon in the Winds of Winter
-
Possibly taken/burned by Dany after she arrives in Westeros
#6.)The Wall Massive barrier of ice that stretches across the northern border of the 7 kingdoms (700 feet tall of ice stone and earth, 19 castles with only 3 currently manned)
-
Made to defend the realms of men against the Others and other monster for ~8,000 years (debatable) since the end of the Long Night
-
Joramun (King beyond the Wall) helped defeat the Night's King
-
Gendel/Gorne tunneled under the Wall (Gorne's way)
-
The Horned Lord is thought to have used magic to pass the Wall
-
Bael the Bard led the free folk against the Wall (supposedly after previously visiting Winterfell and impregnated the Lord's maiden daughter)
-
Raymun Redbeard gathered Wildlings and breached the Wall in 226 AC
-
Jon/Ygritte/Thenns climb the Wall in ASOS and later attack Castle Black from the south
-
Mance Rayder assaults the Wall at Castle Black (with numerous feints at other locations along the Wall) in ASOS
-
Bowen Marsh leads the Watch against the Weeper and his band of warriors (not technically the Wall)
-
Upcoming assault on the Wall/fall of the Wall
Please let me know if I missed any other attacks or assaults on any of these strongholds. Also feel free to express any opinions you have on the above attacks or the strength of the individual seats.
