This was already said in the FAQ riot posted and with this phrasing i imagine it is just something in-game chat related but for sure not emote/login screen/death screen related.

To my knowledge this was not a feature on pbe so it was not for nothing
Afaik they said eternals could be disabled, but that it would still show them on your death recap when disabled. So the bitching was and probably still is for something.
