StarCraft 2.. sort of?
It's an amazing multiplayer game and.. well, the base game is free for singleplayer but you need to pay for the other "chapters", multiplayer is completely free however with all of the content there.
I'm sorry if it's not exactly what you're looking for, it's the closest thing I could think of, I hope you'll find something fun!
The only one that comes to mind is FEAR Online which is ages old and probably doesn’t exist anymore. Multiplayer infrastructure costs money, so free normally comes with a catch and lootboxes.

Stick fighter is cool and it's like $2. Then there's the Jackbox games where you only need to buy one copy and everybody else joins on their phones.
