10pm. Sunday Night. Melbourne City. Why is everything closed?
We were in the Flinders Street area. Were we blind?

If I owned a shop around there, I wouldn't want to deal with the drunk bogans at 10pm either
Judgemental much?
Yes they are...
Supper club?
Bars/Clubs would most definitely have been open, but normal shops would be closed.
Everything? Bars, restaurants, fast-food, supermarkets, milk bars, etc should all be open. But not many folks want to go hat shopping (you're in the Flinders St area!) at 10pm Sunday.
Bar mostly. We'd just eaten at Lygon Street and wanted to find a bar (even coffee) somewhat close to the hotel our friend was staying at.
That chessboard coffee place on Swanston is always open. Always.
I hear Lygon street has fresh meat?
I can't remember what it's called either... The coffee's not good though.
Used to be better, yeah. But sometimes, there's just no alternative.
Dude reddit meetup in progress.. 55 Elizabeth street!
A weeknight excursion to the city is not so great when you live in the 'burbs.
Eh, fuck... How's that going, then?
E55 is a cool bar. Especially for one that's so close to Flinders st station.
Unfortunately even during weekdays the shops closes early. Apart from pubs and bars.
Yeah, what exactly were you hoping to find? Afternoon tea?
There are plenty of places to go, even on a Sunday night, but only the kind of places that the marketplace demands are open - eating, drinking, dancing, gambling, sex(ing), etc.
You weren't looking for anything else at 10pm, were you? What kind of sick pervert are you?
(You probably need a laneway guide, or to push a few doors that appear to be closed.)
Yeah, we were mostly looking for a watering hole near the hotel our friend was staying at. Most of the laneways nearby seemed totally closed up.
That's one of the traps for new players - finding the right places at the right times. But I'm sorry to say I'd be surprised if there weren't a thousand people holed up somewhere warm and licensed, dancing or tucked in a dark corner.
Then again, perhaps everyone had had a big weekend and stayed in, in which case places do close early.
Much as I hate to say it, you can always find some sort of replica of 'life' across the river at the big cash burners. And someone will usually have an idea of where to go next... :-)
But next time do your research first so you know all the hard-to-find places. We're not about to start advertising them to the pissheads on the main street corners! As a general rule, the places you don't see people on the street are where you want to look more closely, often at the "graffiti"... ;-)

That was largely my reason for posting here. I'm not really comfortable with the inner city yet, and it consistently seems to be like a secret club where no-one actually wants to tell you how to find places worth going to. :p
Look, to be honest it will take you years to find and try all the bars in Melbourne; the best thing to do is tag along with someone who knows where they're going, and ask people you like the look of where they've been, or where they're going.
You can get guide books, decks of cards, and all sorts of things, but the risk there is that as soon as it becomes widely-known, all the cool people will find somewhere else to go.
It's a fluid thing, and from season to season preferences change.
If you're walking down a laneway and everything seems shut, maybe you should start pushing a few doors. Some of them will creak open to reveal a-whole-nother world. Or just a staircase leading to mystery... Always look across the street so you can see what's happening on the upper floors - very little of interest happens at ground level; it's either above or below!
You'd be better off in Richmond, Fitzroy or Carlton on a Sunday night, I reckon. There are some great bars in those suburbs open til 1am on a Sunday night... most pubs will close by 11 otherwise.
Bar open is.......open....(Till 3am)
Bar Open can suck my balls. Worst bar staff in Melbourne.
At least you won't spend too much..
Might be worth your while picking up one of these
Most of the bookshops and newsagents stock them
Haha, you can go to New Guernica until 3am, then you can hit Stalactites, then there's this dodgy cafe on Swanston... And 7-11s, but that's about it.
That was you? Try to keep it down next time, some of us were trying to sleep.
