Spellcleave mages are putting me off my own chosen class, what do?

Question

I've rolled a Mage since day 1 of classic and every group I see wants to just AOE farm every instance for hours on end, I'm not into that and the amount of shitty mages who can do nothing but Frost Nova and Blizzard is making me despair for when I'll have to really compete for gear later on.

I also kinda wanna re-roll as a tank because they're always in demand, I was wondering do I stick it out to 60 and then level and alt or just go for it right away?

What? This whole post is so stupid.

What do you think you'll be doing at endgame in raids? You'll be sitting there again, spamming Frostbolt until the boss dies.

In fact, it takes more skill to pull off a successful, coordinated staggered AOE chain pull than it does playing a single target DPS mage build.

There's a herd of mages that just shot up to 60 doing this that only know how to use aoe spells. 2 mobs? Yep better burn all my mana spamming blizzard and arcane explosion.

We really should start making in game channels named 'Traditional-5man' or something like that, or a discord server. Many people want to play non-spellcleave, we should be able to organize ourselves better.

I am not anti spellcleave groups, they certainly have a purpose, but I don't want that to cannibalize the whole game , I want both kinds of dungeon play around.

Just a relaxing group, with 1. warrior, 1 priest or druid, 1 warlock or mage , 1 rogue and 1 hunter or shaman

The amount of shitty mages makes me happier to be playing a mage. I've only ever played a mage and I can't wait to bait out all of their counterspells later and then clap them.

Well, mages are indeed overpowered as balls. This is just something we're gonna have to live with. As a hunter main I've started struggling to get groups because people often just want 3 mages in their 5 mans, and while thats conceptually boring, it is extremely effective sadly.

Atleast we can look forward to TBC, which should atleast do something to mitigate it if the community itself doesn't.

Well mages will dominate TBC "meta" aswell. On private servers mages and locks are in very high demand for AOE rep farming. In heroics dungeons all want mages for their insane CC and strong burst dmg and in raids ranged casters (mages and locks) dominated the DPS meters up until late t6 early sunwell.... TBC is a better game and more balanced for sure but the "meta" people are chasing after isnt gonna change unfortunately.

At least you can get into groups if you choose, it's a hard life here for a solo rogue.

I've noticed I need to be over leveled for the dungeon by at least 1 or 2 levels before most groups will accept me as a solo rogue lol

What servers are y'all on? On mine I rarely even see people doing spellcleave and it's simple to just get a normal group.

As a warlock grinding SM dungeons I am getting annoyed with cleave groups. Sure, i get plenty of invites, but only about 1 in 10 are a traditional group. Im really not trying to balls to the walls sweat these dungeons, just want to play.

Every time i respond to a LFM i get the response "CLEAVE, BETTER KNOW WTF UR DOING." Not what i expected after having not been to SM since vanilla. Shame, was looking forward to these dungeons.

Well for leveling and farming you’d be choosing to do less dps if you don’t do the aoe stuff

i play mage and i just shoot fireballs at things all day, haven't had any complaints so far

I'm annoyed at how the moment a tank finds themselves in a group of mages and warlocks they want to spellcleave, even with no experience, and then gets mad at everyone else when he pulls mobs that can AoE on top of casters/healer, chooses bad positions, or communicates unclearly. I've wasted many runs in SM Cath that way and I'm sure it'll continue.

Meta is always changing and plenty of people want to run it normally, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Did you ever play vanilla? It was the same back then. You'll be fine as you make it into end game. It'll just be a little rough getting there.

Spell cleave is awesome. Did it my first time as the lowest mage in a cath run at 38. We were destroying that instance within like 5 pulls. Was insane duuuudddeeee

Can be awesome but you need a tank that can do it and patient aoe. I play mage and lock and I want a pally tank I've done it with warrior tanks. Flat as a mage tank picks the pull style.

Nah it’s better with 4 mages, or 1 loc 3 mages or a really really good or overleveled warrior.

Yeah I did 1 lock 3 mage 1 priest. Was super awesome and fast. Requires a little communication in rotating novas, but it’s rewarding as hell when you all execute and the mobs fall. We had such a fun time we did more runs than expected. Fucking triune and mograines might dropped every time lol

I would never say AoE is hard but there's certainly more to it compared to single target spec
