Temp fluctuations, 3700x

Discussion

So i recently built a new pc for mostly gaming, Specs -570 aorus elite -3700x -Rtx2070 super -Bios F4 Using stock cooler as of now.

I am having temperature fluctuations, on idle my cpu shows its around 50 and jumps up to like 60 or 65 for a millisecond when i open up something,( ie chrome, steam) i wanted to know if this is normal, this is my first amd cpu and i never had this kind of "issue" with intel ( previous one was i7 7700). I am using the amd balanced power plan, changing it to windows power plan doesn't do anything.

Thanks for all the help.

This is normal. 3000 series Ryzen idles a bit higher and tends to fluctuate more most likely due to the die shrink. There is less room for heat dissipation

This is because of the Boost algorithm of the Ryzens. When I undervolt/underclock using Ryzen Master, it can go as low as 35-40C under load with Wraith Prism on 700-800 rpm.

A lot here do not recommend this because they want to squeeze every bit of performance out of the Ryzens, but if you want a cool and quiet PC, unfortunately this seems to be the best solution.

I've tried various methods such as setting extreme fan curves, turning off PBO, turning on Cool n quiet, and none of them helps. Only undervolting/underclocking helped.

I debated whether to not undervolt/underclock, but after a noisy night of loud fans ramping up and down with my PC running game on emulator overnight, I've had enough.

What voltage did you set it to? Mine goes from around 1.40 to 1.45. I am using gigabyte SIV.

I set it to 1.2V max and 3.6GHz max on Manual (if you leave it as Default, it'll happily try to hit 4.4GHz when it can)

This is Ryzen Master application, not the BIOS, so is independent of the motherboard.

Temps should fall to 40-45 under load. I tried setting the clock to 3.6GHz using MSI command center and it fell to 35-40, but I think that's the wrong software to use.

I'll be sure to try that, any other things i should know about? Thanks for all the help!

Nothing much really, the default fan curve worked well for the undervolting/underclocking.

You might want to figure out what's an ideal fan curve also without the undervolting/underclocking just so you can learn more (usually the mobo software will have this setting)

Don't touch the memory part if not required @ Ryzen Master, and be aware that settings on Ryzen Master have to be reloaded after every boot.

For settings to persist after boot, it'll have to be in the BIOS - but depending on your motherboard, some BIOS settings may not deliver (e.g. I turned on the cool n quiet on MSI BIOS - k it's not cool and it's not quiet)

It's normal but the stock cooler is making it worse than it would be on a good cooler. On top end air coolers you're gonna get somewhere around 36C to 38C on idle. On Ryzen balanced plan the aggressive boost on non ABBA bios causes a sharp boost and spike in temps to around 56C when you open something on browser or Steam.

This is worse on Gigabyte boards because they don't got timed fan smoothing and instead got +-3C fan smoothing. From this you can understand that there's no way to get around a temp spike from 36C to 56C (20C) without the fan spinning up and down.

Amd added boost filters to the latest ABBA bios for exactly this, to reduce light load boosts. Seems like significant improvement. Here's hoping they would continue to tune the boosts in the future and make Zen2 even better.

Thought I would chime in as well, as I have my first Ryzen pc since the weekend.

I currently have mine set to performance mode. I also was worried about idle voltage and temps.

Mine is all set to auto on the motherboard with 1.4v as well ( can’t check the specific)

I set a manual curve so that the stock cooler runs at 45 percent from 0 degrees. Might be a tad too loud for some, but I notice it less then if I leave it to rev up.

One weird thing I’ve noticed is that sometimes the LED makes it looks like the fan isn’t working, even though I have set the fan curve.

I’m keeping an eye on a new bios for the mortar max when available as well.

Normal. 7nm combined with an aggressive boost algorithm to get the job done faster results in a lot of heat in a very small area. Better cooler will help, but only with the noise, the fluctuations will still be there.

When you're using a Gigabyte board, you can apply a time delay in smart fan. So only when temps are still high after 3-5 seconds the fan reacts to the change.

The main problem with boost is that the chiplet is so small that heat can't be immediately dissipated so you have a brief build-up when boosting.

When you apply the delay your fan won't ramp up and down since temperature settles usually by itself.

But yes, temps are normal and this is expected behaviour

Should i update to the F5a bios? I am currently on F4.

Yes.

Download latest chipsetdriver from AMD. Set power profile to Ryzen. In profile advanced setting change minimum cpu performance to 1%. Download Ryzen master and while computer idle use it to check if cores are sleeping apart from 1 or 2 doing low performance back ground tasks. Icue and other similar software can rampup boost clocks at idle. If your getting lots of cores awaikening try disabling background software. I can have all my cores asleep with some of my background programs disabled. Using normal power plans negates filtering of speradic boosting from background software. Widows 10 1903 helps keep threads together with new scheduler so update to that if you can

I have icue running in background because i have a corsair mouse and i use macros for it, and it only works when its running in the background. Without ac the temps sit around 50c and jump up to 55 to 65 for brief moment when i open something but quickly goes back down to 45 to 50c and with ac the idle desktop temps sit around 40-45. While gaming the temps go to a constant 60-66c and occasionally peak at 70c, is that safe? All this is with the stock cooler as of now, i updated to the latest bios (F5a) and use SIV from gigabyte so the fans don't ram up and down while idle or browsing web. Is this safe?

40-45C is ok on idle, with you mentioning AC you must have a high ambient room temps. Max of 70C for gaming sounds great. Will get most of the boost for Zen2. Zen 2 is ok up to 90C but will loose a lot of its boost speed. Everything looks to be working fine.

For the most current AMD Chipset Balanced Power Plan, why are you recommending to turn down the minimum cpu performance down from 99% to1%? Shouldn't AMD know what there doing and set it there for a specific reason?

Originally Ryzen balanced was designed to keep AMD Zen cpus more active in Windows than standard balance plan. The Zen cpus where loosing performance due to how the windows balanced power plan engaged idle states. Then it got superseeded by Windows updates and wasnt needed any more. AMD retasked Ryzen balanced for Zen 2 cpus to help there idle states. It has gone through several updates to redress power idling and goes in part with the AMD chipset drivers. As far as actual minimum processor state settings are. The question is why did AMD bother making the Ryzen balanced plan adjustable if they meant to keep it a fixed setting. Simple answer is AMD set it to minimum interuption of performance which would be at its lowest power saving level. In benchmarks they may well be a difference but in real world probably none. when I updated to 1903 Ryzen balanced plan changed its self to 1% which it was unable to do in 1809, minimum allowed was 5%. I suspect this has something to do with the new scheduler as I am getting higher single core speeds. Due to the interaction of bios, chipset driver and Windows version it is a blackbox in as far as how it all works together.

My setup is Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite on the most current F5A bios version, 3900x, Corsair 3600 ram, H100i Pro v2 and Rtx 2070 Super. I current have mine on the Ryzen Balanced Plan with mim CPU state set to 85%. So you would definitely recommend setting mim CPU state to 5% correct? I havent done a stress test yet, but I get around 65c while gaming on Fortnite and youtube in the background.

in_notsCH7/2700X/RX480•

If you have it set to 99% you will notice in idle states that it does boost higher more often. But this is at Idle or very low load. Having it a 5% or lower just keeps the temps down and havent noticed any performance deficit. It is a hard thing to judge as it relies so much on the combination of bios and chipset driver. It looked to have more influence on the first release bios and chipset driver for AM4 but now seams much less so. I couldnt give a difinitive answer, it just helped with early AM4 bios and chipset driver.
