FAQ About Mini Motorways and Apple Arcade Exclusivity

News

#Q: What on earth is Apple Arcade? A: It’s a game subscription service for Apple devices. For $4.99 USD, you get access to a large selection of games with no in-app purchases or ads, can be played offline, and have save data sync between your devices.

#Q: What devices can I play Mini Motrways on? A: Mini Motorways is available on all devices that support Apple Arcade. This includes:

  • iPhones running iOS 13.0 or later
  • iPads running iPadOS 13.0 or later
  • Apple TV’s running tvOS 13.0 or later
  • Macs running MacOS Catalina 10.15 or later Additionally, it will be released on Steam for Windows and MacOS later in 2020.

#Q: Will Mini Motorways be released on non-Apple platforms? A: TL;DR: Yes. The game is planned to release on Steam sometime in 2020. Additionally, the devs have confirmed that the game will release on Nintendo Switch and “additional PC Storefronts.” at some point.

Developers of Arcade games can’t release them on other “mobile operating systems”. In practice, this means that while it won’t be on Android, Dinosaur Polo Club can release it on any other platform they want - PC, PS4, Switch, etc. As a result, the game is slated to release on Steam (on both PC and macOS) in 2020. DPC has yet to announce plans for any other platform.

#Q: When will Mini Motorways be released on Steam? A: Sometime in 2020, according to the Steam page, for both Windows and MacOS. The developers have said that they want to take the time to make sure it "feels at home on Steam".

#Q: This exclusivity seems unfair! A: That’s a fine opinion to have. I understand - if you just don’t have an Apple platform right now, there’s no way to play the game. But, please understand that isn’t something only Apple is doing - console exclusivity has been a thing in gaming since the 80’s. It’s also worth pointing out that Apple’s deal is actually less restrictive on devs than most console-exclusivity deals, since the devs can release their games on any other platform besides Android or another subscription service, even on the same day. In fact, several Apple Arcade games have already made their way Steam and gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch, so if it does get released on other platforms, chances are you’ll have something to play it on, even if you don’t currently own an Apple device.
