Pirates spawn before colony defense station is ready
I'm on my second playtrough of this game and I have one million, but still no cruisers. I want to setup a colony but I learned that pirates raids spawn before the defense station can be built. And since I don't even have a cruiser to match the pirate fleet how can I defend my colony?

You first obtain said cruisers before building a colony. Tier 1 station won't win against any bigger raid by itself anyway and you would need to fight alongside it (and a bunch of frigates and few destroyers is not going to help much).
I have one apogee right now, along with a Sundur, hammerhead, some high tech phase destroyer plus a carrier (the one you get with the military start).And of course some less important frigates and interceptors. I plan on getting one more cruiser, should be enough?
Probably not lol. High-end pirate raids can involve up to a dozen Atlas MKIIs. Try to scavenge and mothball all the big ships you can find and just stash them on the colony. When the raid arrives, outfit them and abuse the colony shipyard instant repair to fight the pirates, then just stash them again.
Personally I don't build a colony until I own at least 1-2 real capital ships. That guarantees enough firepower to defend against just about any pirate raid. Easiest one to get is probably Conquest (Independents sell them on their military worlds and they only need reputation, other factions require a commission on top of it). Besides those that at least 3-4 cruisers. This is sufficient to take on strong raids when around your station or defeat weaker ones alone.
I built a colony in the first 4 months of game, which gave me 8 months of blessed pirate free building time.
Also, if you get neutral relations with pirates they shouldn’t ever raid you
Yeah, that'll probably be fine for the first few months until you get the station up. Remember to build an industry too! That's where the money comes from.
