I was in New Orleans recently and that place is crackling with the alt scenes (goth, metal, punk, folk punk, industrial, all the good shit)
I’m in pdx and it’s all granola and rei
Raccoon Venom, Garden Hoe, Garbagewitch, Saturn BC, Rascal Miles, Trash Dawg. Sparkle Carpet, Kids Table, Dead Coyote, and Fake News are electric bands adjacent to the folk punk scene.
Porch Cat in to save the day! btw, thanks for reminding me that I wanted to listen to more Sparkle Carpet
You seem like you know about the Portland folk punk seen so I hope you don’t mind me asking but do you know any folk punk that would also be 21 and under? its extremely frustrating when non of my friends appreciate it so I listen alone then when a bigger band I actually know comes by there always at a fucking bar I can’t get into!!
Check out Saturn BC, Eggboy, Kids Table and other associated acts! Also, follow venues like the Waypost and Marrow PDX. Dogtooth & Nail sometimes host shows at their house and they often play all ages shows. Raccoon Venom hosts house shows in Vancouver.
is it really that hard to get a fake ID nowadays?
All ages and DIY venues increase kids' access to music during their formative years. Supporting such spaces is a good fucking thing.
Bridge City Sinners and Dogtooth & Nail are both amazing and Portland-based. and that's just off the top of my head.
I absolutely hate the lead singer of BCS, and that whole band seems like a bunch of posers because of how annoying she is.
Interesting take. Care to elaborate?
It's not that interesting and I don't care to elaborate. Lead singer seems fake as fuck. You're probably a poser too if you can't tell.
You named two bands. I was talking an entire city teeming with a scene.
golly I'm so sorry. Fuck me for offering you some folkpunk musicians to support in your locale....on a folkpunk subreddit.
really sorry for the inconvenience :)
made me laugh papa, cctx gives love!
Dude where. The only folk punk band I know of down there is dirty rotten snake in the grass
Seconded. The only show I’ve been able to find around was them, days n daze, and... the name had “gallows” in it but I can’t remember the rest... about a year ago.
Goddamn Gallows they were pretty good
You guys have a folk punk scene? That shit doesn't exist in Canada
I don’t know if you’d call it a scene but yxe has the teeniest tiniest one! I went to high school with most of them but you can find the odd genuine folk punk house show here! I would keep looking, I think they’re usually there just very small.
All We've Got Records is based out of Halifax, right?
I saw AJJ in Cleveland. Does that count.
Same, not sure if it does, bud :/
Used to live in Akron, thought we count as midwest lol.
LA: ??????
Not really, I lived there for the last 4 years and not much of a folk-punk scene. There is a sick punk and hardcore ect.. scene. I was in the inland empire so I went to a lot of shows at Bridge Town DIY (which is an amazing space). I suggest if you want to get into activism or the local scene get on their facebook page. Go to a show and talk to people/the bands between sets! If you don't live close to there, look on facebook pages for house shows or that sort of thing. Plenty of the folk-punk ethic I just didn't find many bands that quite fit the mold.
VLHS represent as well!
I've been in the pnw for over 5 years now, but came from the Inland Empire and would go to Blood Orange Infoshop and Bridgetown DIY a bunch. Bridgetown is definitely an amazing space. Does Che Cafe in San Diego still do shows? I remember they closed down for a bit, but heard they reopened.
Long beach was cool for a while
i am the local scene
Mood
Wait a minute. Gainesville should be here for the southern freaks. Even st Augustine, which is fifty miles away and where AM! Was living recently has shows
What folk punk scenes going on in Gainesville? I just moved here for college and I wanna find some good venues and bands.
Look for a profile called Punk Bird on Facebook. They're somewhere around there!
Zine seems super cool but does he actually make any music?
GNV hell yeah!
I'm from New England.
Even if there was some kind of scene nearby, I'd stick out like a sore thumb.
Even if I didn't, I panic around too many new people.
Oh, well.
Aww, I feel this. One of my best friends had to nearly drag me to a show before I was even able to start going to any shows. If you're near central mass, feel free to msg me if u need some motivation ;)
fuck australia
Yep looks like we're kinda fucked :( Know any folk festivals near Sydney or Melbourne?
Only festival I've ever heard about in Australia is HOBOFOPO.
Sweet I'll check it out prob go next year if the lineup's a bit better. Didn't AJJ play somewhere in Melbourne like a year or two ago?
Yeah NZ is just as bad. If there are any kiwis here hmu, always keen to jam
I've met a grand total of one other person into folk-punk in kiwiland. At least the Aussies have Chris Burrows, us kiwis are shit out of luck
What area are you in? Most of the punk fans are actually hippies which is kinda deceiving lol, we are out there. In my circle there's a good 20+ who know every wingnut album back to front
I'm in Welly, always keen to expand my social circles
There is a Dunedin based band that I haven’t been able to catch yet as I work hospo hours. Look pretty promising.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uKaO5tAxUWs
There has been a few scattered bands/artists at times but certainly no real scene. Well no scene independent of the normal punk/hardcore/thrash scene.
Yeah I know a couple of these peeps pretty well. Icky, the washboard guy, is a pretty good mate of mine. he did my stick n pokes haha. Would definitely check em out if u get a chance.
What area are you in mate?
Dunedin. :)
No musical talent though, if that’s the question! Although I guess if you need a tall messy looking guy with a rubbish beard to man a tea chest bass or something then musical talent is an optional extra.
Im in the south east.
Can confirm
upstate New York is WACK
Howdy, here to commiserate! Central New Yorker here who travels long distances for folkpunk shows and turned their annoyance at their separation from the scenes into something cool!
I run an archival project for the folkpunk community (@folkpunk archivist on IG) and I'd be lying if I said that its existence wasn't at least in part due to my geographical separation from the music scenes I love so much :)
Oh man so you get the struggle! You have a very nice Instagram feed lol. The best I can do around here is travel to Syracuse to hopefully catch some kind of show :(
I can relate. I'm stuck in Delmarva without any reliable transportation, so if I want to go to any shows it's either major cities (NYC, DC, etc.) or bust. I'm trying to save up to be able to make it to at least one show on Chris Burrows' tour in 2020, but that's the limit of possibilities right now.
+1 on the archival thing. I don't have anything like that, but I've been a data hoarder for years, and I can't help myself from trying to keep up and getting my hands on cds whenever possible. It's not much, but I'm starting on my second shoebox's worth.
Rock on! Sounds like you're doing something cool!
Cries in West Virginia
There’s been so much in the North East, specifically PA and Ohio, I’m confused about this post
I lived in Ohio for years. Always considered it part of the midwest.
Edit: but Phili and Scranton do have serious scenes
I guess yeah you’re right, Ohio is technically Midwest. I played so many shows back n forth between SW PA with that scene it felt like they were part of the PA scene lol. SW PA has Hills and Rivers, Cousin Boneless, Homeless Gospel Choir, Ricky Steece lived here for awhile along with a bunch of smaller lesser known performers. PA in general is full of a lot of Folk Punk acts.
I wish I could find shows in the Philly area. I'm right outside in the west burbs. Used to go to Killtime for hardcore and punk shows and saw the Low Budgets at a house show. Been into folk punk for a bunch of years but haven't found many shows. Guess it doesnt help I'm kind of a loner who was into drugs for a long time, and been dealing with some health problems the past couple years including losing a leg last June. Still love the music just miss the small intimate shows from when I was a bit younger.
Follow the bands Frankly Lost, Everyone Except Me, & Driftwood Soldier. They are incredible and play Philly constantly.
Thank you!

Living in a small town. It's real sad boi hours who up :((((((
I don't even live in North America :c
Do you live in Denmark? Well too fucking bad. No punk scene for you
Doesn't Copenhagen at least have somewhat of a punk scene?
Used to. After the youth house on jagtvej 69 got closed it's all died basically. We never really had that much of a music scene. Mostly individual punks, and when their one place got torn down, they disappeared.
Cries in European
We have one local folk band. Other than that I just gotta hope DnD comes through with a few opening acts to get my fill
Lots of knowledge here. Anyone have any bands / recommendations for Las Vegas residents?
Meanwhile in New Zealand. :(
Anywhere on the east coast; you must personally know a member of Apes of The State
cries although I did see Harley Poe post something for MA
[deleted]
Misread that as 'you must personally know an ape of the state' and was completely prepared to accept that sentence
Damn, lol. Just moved to Massachusetts. Guess I'm never playing a show again cause I think April thinks I'm weird. I kinda fangirled out a bit when my duo act got on a bill with them.
days n daze is playing in November
Right?! So excited!
I don't think you're weird ! Lol
Goddamnit April, stop being so supportive and let me project my insecurities onto marginally well known members of a community I hold in high regard!
I wanna come to Mass in the Spring let's play together again
there's a scene in rockland
Not a ton of shows with just folk punk on the bill, but there are often a few punk shows who will have someone folk punkish as an opener
