Fucking. Quora.

I bet the guy answering lists his qualifications as 'I'll be making the green grass grow when I ship in 2020'.

Marines have over 1,000 aircraft including helos, fighters, cargo planes. They have entire air wings and many fly from navy carriers.

Yup, can confirm. Marine airwinger here.

But, marines don't fly planes...

Marines have pilots, a bit crashy sometimes.

True. There was the 1998 Cavalese cable car disaster.

Every branch has pilots

Yeah, arent planes just Navy and Air Force? Marines are just ground forces aren't they?

Nope, Marines fly F18’s, AV-8 Harriers, F-35’s, KC-130s, UH-1 N&Y, AH-1 V&Z, MV-22, and what I fly on the CH-53E.

So sad to not see my CH-46E listed anymore... If I had stayed in I would have rather gone to the 53 side than the 22s. Two MEU's and the 53 guys were just like us, unlike those damn Skid Kids, won't even mention the Flying Submarine guys...

Marines are a sub section of the navy essentially.

3
Aspiring-Owner•

Yeah, but they're kinda like the general land portion right? Like rifleman and snipers, or am I confused? From what I've heard the marines are the general purpose ground soldiers, Seals are special operations, and the Navy have their own pilots separate from the two

7
NorthernOrgan•

Yeah basically.

5
papafrog•

USMC is not a "general purpose ground soldier." The function of the USMC is amphibious assault, landing, and securing the beach head for follow-on forces.

The vehicle through which this is accomplished is the ARG/MEU, which has people, guns, boats, and aircraft, all in support of getting Marines to the beach and taking the beach.

Can they do general purpose stuff? Probably. But that's not what they're for.

Navy, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, and Marines all have some kind of air element.

1
Aspiring-Owner•

True, but I thought Navy and Airforce were the only ones with jets and such. Normally when I think of the other branches I think of helicopters and transport planes, not really fighter jets and such

You know, it’s hit like this that makes me think a global extinction even might not be the worst.

Please don't lump the rest of us in with the US.
