That's not a mineshaft; That's an atrium.
That's no moon, it's a space station.
Now I am debating moving grass down to the bottom...

Man you guys are so creative. I play this game and I could never make something so nice.
Just steal other people's ideas. Seriously. Rebuild stuff you've seen other people build from memory. Assuming you're not a super-autist with photographic memory, the version you build will be slightly different, and that may inspire you to get new ideas.
I watched X's "Let's play minecraft" video, and he built a vertical mineshaft with a glass top. I started copying that, and then midway through, I had the great idea to pour water on top, and then create a lake on top of it, and then instead of a mineshaft, it's become an underwater livingroom for relaxing and watching the animals frolic.
I agree with Nebu, the glass topped mine shaft was an idea i saw on a video, glassing in the sides was my idea, but I am pretty sure plenty of people have also done that before me.
I was so disappointed when he abandoned the X-system.
That was quite a shock to me, but the freaking UNDERWATER SPIDER CAVE he found more than made up for it, IMHO, and then he found that mountain of death, and swam UP that freaking underground waterfall...
It's crazy, but I'm more addicted to watching X play Minecraft than 90% of the animes I've seen.
I have a waterfall elevator to get up and down one of my towers, they are great :)
looks at your mineshaft
looks at my 1x2 'mineshaft' with a torch in it
weeps gently
Mine is a tad overkill in width... and it went through this network on tunnels that I decided to glass in. I really underestimate the amount of glass I would need.
Love the "glassing in" you've done there. Adds a lot of depth while still keeping the structure.
It also keeps out any late night mobs that might want to ruin my fun.
