I’m sure giving Monsanto a patent on the world’s food supply won’t bite us in the ass

Publicly owned GMO crops can save the world and solve hunger
Monsanto should be destroyed and have their assets nationalized
nationalized
More like internationalized, just to be safe.
Very, VERY good call, the last thing I'd want is a US gov in charge of global crops
Let’s just adapt to our impending death, with market innovation. Gonna need different food when we’re all fish people
the issue of corporate ownership/patents aside, it may very well be absolutely necessary to genetically modify food to grow in the future hellscape so we don't starve.
Paolo Bacigaluppi has some amazing sci-fi set in a world where the climate collapse has happened and multinationals have gene patents and are trying to get everywhere hooked on their seeds. Basically: energy expensive, genetic engineering cheap. The Windup Girl rips.
From Monsanto's perspective the ideal solution would be the "accidental" contamination of the worldwide gene pool with their patented Terminator gene. Want to have a baby? You'd better be ready to pay Monsanto. Want to eat? Monsanto. Want a tree? Monsanto again!
Something needs to be done about these fuckers.
First Snowcrash predicted the future, now Wind Up Girl. I wanted Neuromancer, damn it.
I want to be one of the dreadlock ghosts from Matrix Reloaded
I want a telepathic slime mold for a neighbor like in that one Philip K Dick book.
I want to do drugs and have one giant orgy for all 500 years of my adult life like in an Ian M Banks book
I wonder if the monsanto/bayer defense force will show up in this thread. They certainly do in any other thread that is critical of Monsanto/Bayer/Roundup.
are they dumb enough to visit a communist sub?
I also wonder if the sub being quarantined will prevent them from showing up
I mean, I'm sure I've been accused of being a Monsanto shill and here I am
Lmao okay let's hear it

Same, still waiting for my check to come in the mail >_<
How long did it take you to get yours?
I think my mail carrier is stealing both my Monsanto stipend and my Soros bucks!
hmm what if we grew things to eat instead of using crops to feed cattle
Abolish the patent system
read The Windup Girl
If you give them a patent on the world food supply it would be easier to justify nationalizing them. Just saying.
Nationalize monsanto. "Organic" food is for gardeners and people with six figure incomes.
Real Soylent Green hours
Genetic engineering could actually make food production much better if that is actually what motivates it as opposed to profits. But I don't think we're gonna get Monsanto worker owned any time soon.
Oh shit we forgot the genetic key that turns all the food on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Like making foods that only Jewish people are allergic to
Fuck Monsanto but GMOs could be great if publicly owned.
Exactly, I've worked at a number of Health Food stores in the past and I had almost lost my voice trying to explain this the fucking anti-GMO liberals that shop those places.
The problem is Monsanto, GMO's are good!
Fun fact though for those morons is that a lot of Monsanto's copyrighted seeds were made through artificial selection, not transgenic methods. Meaning that a lot of the seeds they're complaining about are no more man made then a lemon. Shit 90% of the time they can name one of the offending products its not a seed meant for human consumption, the GMO corn they fed the rats in the famous anti-GMO study (the one with all the tumors they pass around) isn't meant to be eaten by anyone, that breed of corn was designed to be turned into ethanol and plastics.
It's not about health, these people think GMO's are gross so they want them banned. That's literally it too, they hear these planta are having bacterial and viral DNA spliced into their genomes and it freaks them the hell out because they don't understand biology. Rich white people in the U.S., Canada, and Europe think its icky people in drought stricken areas and places that are hard to farm will suffer. But hey, so long as Heather and Sam can enjoy their Double Mocha Frappuccino without fear of any bacteria or viruses getting in them huh?
The Seralini study had numerous problems, not the least of which was the small sample size, and that the breed of rats used are prone to growing tumors to begin with. It was eventually retracted.
Glad to hear they retracted it. Good for them.
This is the problem with postmodern thought. If rationality is just a myth made up by white patriarchy, it follows that even if gmos have never hurt anyone I can still hold on to the irrational belief that they do and if you tell me otherwise you’re just not as woke as me.
Postmodern perspectives are unhelpful if you’re trying to develop a materially better world.
Postmodernism is not about simply ignoring the material in favor of social attitudes, it describes what we already do and have done for millenia. People don't need postmodernism to disregard science.
What we can do and what postmodern theory and analysis can help us to do is work to change people's perceptions on the subject. But blaming the whole problem or any problem on postmodernism is like blaming hammers for how badly your Ikea bookshelf turned out, those things come with hex keys because thats the tool you should have used.
Postmodernism rejects materialism so it is absolutely about holding social conditions as more important than material conditions.
On top of that, postmodernists reject meta-narratives especially that of dialectical materialism. Postmodernism and Marxism are contradictory and you don’t belong in any socialist movement if you honestly think that there are no overarching rules by which reality behaves.
Didn’t Lyotard explicitly say modern science was a myth?
Ah yes, the classical "post modernism" strawman, you realise that post modernism has fuck All to do with anything you just wrote right? The whole "rejection of logic and reason" is entirely a right wing fabrikation. The point is, in part, to examine the foundations that these rest upon.
Consider:why is What a White man findes logical superior to What a black woman findes logical? We are not looking at the validity of either argument here, only the context its made in.
Where did I say anything remotely like that?
Oh no, the postmodernists are going to ban GMOs and science to fit their SJW agenda.
Which postmodern philosopher said any of that.
Lyotard said scientific knowledge is a myth.
I've heard on this board we really have no need for GMOs and it's more of a figment of capitalism's tendency to maximize production and thus profit, even though half of the produce is tossed right into the garbage. In reality the issue is distribution, not that crops aren't yielding enough.
I haven't done any research but it really made me think.
GMOs Can be made to take up less land, give more nutrients and use fewer pesticides. Wasting less normal crops will never do that as effectively.
It also helps food deserts become more self-sufficient in the case of disaster
Isn't that promise of GMOs only true in the context of conventionally farmed monocultures? Yield per labor unit is relatively higher in conventional monoculture but the yield per hectare can be higher with polyculture. The time to harvest is just longer.
I'm no expert, just someone who has been casually interested in agriculture since college, so maybe the anprim glasses I was wearing at the time clouded my vision.
Yield per acre may be higher with polyculture, but there's also nothing to stop GMOs from being used in polyculture. There could even be GMO strains optimally designed to facilitate harvesting in polycultures, or strains which might improve the symbiotic nature of polycultures by playing on the strengths and weaknesses of each of the plants in a culture.
Time to harvest is a important factor though, take this years strawberry crop in denmark, a single day with hail meant that the Yield went from near breaking to below average
exactly, it's not about gmos being necessary, but useful

Gotcha, man. Shit would be harder without GMOs is the gist of it. Thanks for taking the time to reply, appreciate it!
True, I have no problem with genetic modification itself, but the company/corporation that owns make its accessibility less than ideal. I mean, I don't think GMO will poison us, but it can lock farmers in a unfair contract.

yeah man i've been watching those carlsagan42 mario maker lets plays too, gmos seem pretty neat
