Is moving to San Francisco realistic for us?
My fiancee and I have decided to sell our condo next year and move. Our top 3 future destinations are all places we have visited before and have come to love: San Francisco, Chicago, and a TBD city in Colorado. San Francisco is probably number 1, but I can't wrap my head around the astronomical cost of living. The average cost of apartments appear to be 30 to 40% higher than Chicago. Is it possible to live anywhere in San Francisco County (but not in, say, Hunters Point or Tenderloin) if you have a household income of maybe $70,000 to $80,000 a year? I was thinking maybe Richmond or Sunset, but I'm worried we wouldn't have any money to go out to eat with the cost of rent. What bits and pieces we are gleaning online doesn't tell the whole story, so I was hoping you guys could give us some insight as to whether we could survive in San Francisco and in what neighborhood.
