Could Korenar or possibly Shortridge ever turn into our next goalie?

A genuine question from a fan who isn’t able to follow the ‘Cuda as closely as I would like. From what I’m able to find, they were both undrafted. With the situation with Jones now, and imo Dell just not much more than a backup are either of the Barracuda goalies potentially next in line, or are they just seen as career AHL depth and for our next goalie we’d have to draft or trade again? It does seem a bit early to label a 21 y/o Korenar anything, but seemingly we should start looking for our next goalie sooner rather than later if Jones has 2 straight pretty bad seasons. And I get that it isn’t all his fault and the defense needs some work, but there are certainly goals that he should be stopping.

Korenar was an all star last season. I went to the Cuda game Friday and he was excellent. It’s a VERY small sample size, but I definitely felt that he had the positioning for the bigs at some point.

Every Cuda game I went to last season had Bibeau starting, so it was great seeing him in net.

I’m wondering if Shortridge could do it. He did very well in collegiate hockey and worked his way past Bibeau, so maybe he can keep that up.

It did not look that way in the preseason, but they could still improve.

Korenar has the best chance but the difference between him and a NHL goal is still probably to big. Our goalie development is total crap. We got lucky with dell but we cant seem to develop a starting NHL goalie from junior to AHL to NHL. Nowadays you either have a guarranteed prospect like tampa had with vasilesky or you get a out of nowhere prospect like binnington. If jones fails again this year i expect us to heavily invest in a good backup or even look to give him to Seattle.

Our goalie development is total crap.

Been several years since they’ve had quality goalies in their pipeline without having to do an “outside hire.” I guess the last time was Nabby/Kipper/Toskala.

Which was because of strelow. A good goalie coach is worth his weight in gold, like the guy out in NYI.

Assuming Seattle would take him.

So based on early looks the notable goalies who may available by then will be..

Schneider

Varlamov

Jones

These are the only 3 goalies who i think could end up on the block unless Montreal or florida put Price or Bob on there. These are based on current contracts so some goalies can end up on here but i dont see it. I think schneider is a little to risky due to injury. Varlamov may be the most attractive and cheapest of the 3. We would def need to sweeten the pot for seattle to take him. Also depends on if seattle wants to compete or start young.

Shortridge is a little more highly thought of for long term potential imho. He is also very big which is what they are looking for these days

Shortridge is from Alaska so I am biased towards him.
