"Should I follow my heart or the advices of others?"

Don't know if that's the right place to ask such a question,please excuse me if not so.I'll try to make this short since you guys are probably not too enthusiastic about reading novels:

• I'm currently 18 and single,on the verge of finishing school and applying for university in Germany to study Dentistry. A month ago I met this girl (17,a year younger than me,respectively a year more to spend in our country before studying abroad) that lives in another city but comes every weekend in mine as we both study german together. She really is the type I've been looking for,has the same interests as me (both wanna study pretty much in the same city/uni) and all that type of stuff..The problem is that she isn't exactly what you'd call "the hottest girl ever" and since I'm "very good-looking" (don't wanna sound bitchy or anything,I'm trying to extract what I think out of the equation as much as possible), all my friends and family say she isn't "the type for me" because of that. Do you think that I should make a move with her or should I just keep it cool and let things pass? (Once more,I'm really looking forward to honest and unironic answers since I need help with the situation)
