So happy with two Queensland games as a Brisbane based fan

So it looks like we play Adelaide, Carlton, Collingwood, GWS and West Coast all twice, unless I’m mistaken.

Going to be two huge games against the Pies, not only because of the rivalry, but because of both teams strengths right now. Always tough games against the Eagles, whether it’s in Melbourne or Perth. GWS will only be stronger after getting players back and looking to avenge the defeat in the Grand Final. Carlton and Adelaide are the two somewhat unknowns in this “double up group”. Adelaide with their new coach could be anything, and Carlton are looking to move up the table still, which will be interesting.

Really want to play Gold Coast at the MCG one day. They are the only team that I’ve never seen Richmond play live.

Tough looking draw, glad to at least play North and the Bulldogs at the G and not Marvel.

Yeah, being an interstate fan, I was actually down in Melbourne and went to that North game last year - wasn’t fun 😔

West Coast home and away, but not much Marvel and only play Geelong once. I’ll take it.

I'm calling us to go 17-5. Lose one of the Eagles and Pies games, Brisbane away (they'll be bent on revenge), Adelaide and GWS away (because we always do).

The Crows could be rock bottom and we’d still find a way to lose against them in Adelaide.

Haven’t lost at the Gabba since 2004, you could say we are due...

I hope that means we're due for a win against the dogs

Look, we’re the best team in the comp and should make finals comfortably next year.

So, I’m really happy with this. Big chunks of the early-mid season in Melbourne, with occasional big, tough games to travel for (West Coast, Brisbane, GWS). They should serve as good measuring sticks. Even if we lose, what can we learn?

Freo at Optus isn’t ideal for Week 23, but hopefully we’re safely top-four at that point, and we know there’s a week off coming anyway.

Yeah who knows with Freo, especially after last years inconsistency and a new coach - by the last round of the season we should know a bit more at least. Hopefully we don’t go there needing to get anything from the game.

I'll be the first to admit I have a clear bias, and that I wasn't bringing this up when we had a dream run in 2017, but what do you all think about the "fix" portion of the fixture?

Geelong people were losing their minds over which ground their finals were played at, and I think the majority (whether it's slim or not) would accept their point on the basis of "fairness". Yet there doesn't appear to be much talk about the league having one of the most contrived draws in world sport.

Big event games against traditional rivals are scheduled as often as possible to maximise the gate and tv numbers, and before a ball is bounced each season the AFL effectively handicap each team.

I get that the intent is (mostly) equalisation and not having a perfectly equal system (that'd require ignoring results from past years and a 34 game season to allow sides to play home and away), and while I don't think a 34 game season is realistic - they could aspire to a fairer, more neutral system.

Each side could play each other once in the first 17 games, randomising whether it's home or away, and the remaining games could be randomised (or they could do something along the lines of their wildcard idea from round 18 onward - which in effect would create a new draw based on ladder positions at the end of round 17).

The fixture is the biggest lever the AFL use to try and ensure good sides don't stay at the top too long and bad sides aren't anchored to the bottom, but should that be the goal? It has a far bigger impact than draft picks and positions too... (which had a massive effect on us when the Sun's and GWS were introduced, but let's not get into that as this post is long enough as it is!)
