Yeah those "get-to-know-you" questions are awful. We were at a wedding recently where a very nice, clearly very young lady (somebody's girlfriend, first plus one to a wedding kinda thing I think) decided to ask me why we didn't have kids, seeing as how all the others in our circle are pregnant or trying or have kids already.

I managed to choke out some polite horseshit, but all I could think was, "Bitch, I don't have kids yet because the one I was pregnant with died and seems to have taken my fertility with them and this fucking wedding was one I RSVP'd no for originally because I thought I was gonna be either massively pregnant or immediately postpartum but fuck me, I totally am the odd man out and thank you so much for pointing that out to me, I never would've noticed my lack of children or pregnancy unless you'd said something!!!"

I was at a friend's wedding literally the day after my miscarriage a few years back. I went so that I could forget about the miscarriage for a little bit and just celebrate my friend's marriage, even though I was still passing clots etc. Anyways at dinner some random was going on and on about how she was pregnant and due the same week I had been. I held it together through that but then she asked me point blank "when are you guys going to have kids?"....... I just told her "Well actually I'm miscarrying right now and was due the same week as you." You could see the color drain from her face and I let the entire table stew in the silence. I hope she learned her lesson. What an idiot.

Ooooooof yeah that's awful. She deserved to be shut down, so I'm glad you did. Still sorry you had to hear that shit, though. People should not be questioning others about their reproductive choices casually like it's okay.

4
C_e_babysad trash panda•

Yeah, I don't understand why it's generally seen as socially acceptable to grill people about their reproductive choices. She seemed really young and clueless so I decided not to make anything of it with her, but like. Damn, thanks for making dinner taste pretty bad for a while, kid.

In Lyft the other night after seeing frozen 2 by myself because I couldn’t bear to see it with my friends with children, Lyft driver casually says “do you want kids?” WHY? I can’t escape it. Being 29 it’s all people ask about.

Baby shower invite for a girl who got preg the same time as me. I miscarried and she didn’t.

Mine is “get to know you” questions. No, I don’t want to hear about how it’s good I don’t have kids yet, old man. Go away!

23
cutiecupcake2•

I hate it too! A hair stylist wanted to know if I had kids and if I wanted them. And I decided to be casually honest. I was there for an out of town wedding so what the hell. Told her we’re not preventing, but it’s taking time. She was so uncomfortable! Like, what did you want??? I guess she expected me to say I’m waiting until after I do all the traveling, get all the degrees, and promotions so she could congratulate me while humbly bragging about how hard it is to have kids.

14
JasmineTea216•

Oh well! Maybe she will learn not to use that as a "go to" small talk topic from now on.

4
cutiecupcake2•

True. And I was open to talk. Sometimes I find one time friendly interactions can be a healthy space for me to open up, it’s weird.

Where's the "all of my friends are pregnant" section of the wheel?

Seriously though, 4 of my friends are due early next year. FOUR!

17
pppollypocket•

Or the “all of my coworkers and my also my boss are pregnant”

7
LoveSingRead•

I have a sticky note on my desk where I keep track because I love to suffer I guess. (Started keeping it about a year ago.) the most I ever had at once was 13, it's now down to 9, but they're a whole new nine than the original thirteen :(

6
jamaicanoproblem•

Wow. I’m in a totally different boat. I don’t know a single couple with a kid who lives in the same state as me (probably bc it is unmanageably expensive here!) One Facebook friend who lives across the country who I never see had a baby about a year ago. That’s it. that said—I’m gonna have to go with the Birthday slice of the wheel because happy birthday to meeeeeee next week I’ll be 31

I went to a weekend camp a couple months ago, and among my friends that I hung out with, I was the only married woman who was not pregnant. And another person I didn't really know also announced her pregnancy in front of me. Of course, that was the very weekend my period decided to show up.

Unsolicited updates on my coworker's daughter's pregnancy. No Sharon, I don't care that your 20 year old druggy kid is having a rough pregnancy because she can't afford to eat quality food. 😡😡

Ugh same but it's my coworkers wife. I love getting U/S pics to our group text that is supposed to be for work....at least theirs was planned and not to a druggie.

My husband and I went to Hawaii last week to get away after a shitty year of fertility treatments and having to TFMR the day after our wedding anniversary. While on vacation a couple tried to get to know us and asked what our trip was for and if we had kids, then proceeded to talk about their four children whom they left at home for two weeks. FUCK OFF!!!!

13
callmekal123•

This pisses me off so much.

I had a lady at the airport ask my husband and I if we were newlyweds (uh, by a year?) and then proceed to talk about her niece who just got married and "wanted to have kids right away so they did," to which I said, "If only it were that easy." She then backtracked uncomfortably lol.

I went to a barre class last night and right before we started the (not visibly pregnant) instructor goes "I won't be doing any of the ab work because I'm pregnant, but you all certainly can!"

Baby store coupons in the mail that I signed up for back when I had a brief success, followed by a MCC and D&C.

Good news, I got my free formula samples well before my due date...for the baby I miscarried at 10weeks. I think I'll see if I can sell it to help pay for the D&C bill...

One of my recent ones was a newborn sighting at work. I was waiting for my patient to use the bathroom and right next to me was my boss adjusting a newborn and talking to the parents about how the baby was doing. I had to walk away for a minute. Why did my patient take so long in the bathroom??

The other one was getting to know you questions. It was actually a nice conversation with a patient who is in her early 40s. She just had a baby and she was telling me her pregnancy/birth story. But she assumed I'm in my early 20s and threw in "there's nothing wrong with having a baby in your 20s, but you still have plenty of time so you don't need to worry." I didn't bother to correct her that I'm actually in my mid-30s and struggling with infertility. Oh, the joys of working in a family-based practice.

Pregnant stranger: my patient the other night was telling me her life story and while I appreciated her opening up to me, she said “some people just aren’t meant to get pregnant. You know.” and then points directly at me. I hadn’t even said anything about my own life!!! I just gaped at her awkwardly. Then I finished my shift and went to my first infertility consultation. Being an L&D nurse is so fun.

Ah, yeah, that's me this week also. While I hope she has an easier time than me, I will also be insanely crushed if she's just poof pregnant immediately.

This process makes me feel like a monster sometimes.

My husband got this new PlayStation game today, not sure what it’s called, but he has to carry a baby around in a artificial womb in an apocalyptic world. Nope from me.

6
Exotic-welshy•

My partner wants that.. if it's the one I'm thinking of.. Daryll from the walking dead is the main character?

1
Saintly2•

Yep, that's the one. From the bits I saw they take the baby from a still mother, then they carry it around. I had to leave the room.

1
Exotic-welshy•

Yeah it's a bizarre concept for a game. Luckily we can justify £65 for a brand new game so I won't have to see it for a while.

Newborn sighting in public. At my SIL's wedding, the best man and his wife have a 6 week old, which was at the rehearsal and dinner yesterday, and will be there all through getting ready to reception today. Which I support them being there and bringing baby. But I also cried in the car last night. In two different alternate universes I would be pregnant at this wedding. And apparently my ability to not be bothered by it while hanging out with a 6 week old only lasts 1 to 2 hours.

Bonus round: get to know you questions. Hair stylist: do you have kids? Family members: when are you guys gonna have kids? I got lucky and dodged the "why dont you want to hold the baby" question at the rehearsal dinner as a lot of ppl held the baby.

5
catzrgood•

I didn’t get a haircut for a YEAR because I had two miscarriages and didn’t want anyone asking me about kids or talking about theirs.

3

Oh man, that sucks and I totally understand. It's so awkward to go through.

How about "planning my brother-in-law's girlfriend's baby shower and constantly getting pinterest pins and texts from my mother-in-law"?

Yep “unexpected pregnancy announcement” for me today. For my 21 year old cousin who just broke up with her boyfriend and is freaking out. 🎉 My MIL who totally means well texted me the news in the middle of my workday.
