How I feel about my sex “education”

I truly believe that infertility and fertility issues should be discussed in sex Ed. I know they want to prevent as many teen pregnancies as possible, but not once did we discuss what it might mean when a girl doesn't get her period when every other girl does, and symptoms of hormonal imbalances. I might've known about my genetic condition causing fertility issues when I was 15 and had treatment for it and been prepared for when I did decide to have kids. Rather than just be told "oh some girls just get their periods later than others" and then throwing me on the pill. I stayed on the pill for 10 years because I truly believed I could get pregnant at the drop of a hat.
These aren't just fertility issues, these are women's health issues too. When should you see a doctor if your periods are irregular? heavy? painful? How much is too much? There's such a wide range, and I think a lot of girls/women don't seek treatment for things they should, because they just normalize their experience.
Yes!!! I absolutely agree! We barely talked about women's health. We talked about what a period was and the basics but no one mentioned anything outside of the norm and like you said, when you should seek medical attention. There needs to be a serious overhaul to the system
Gah! How easy they make it seem to get pregnant!
Don’t sit with a boy in a hot tub, even if your three feet away and not having sex you can get pregnant! 🙄
Scary thing is all of us know the disgustingly hyper-fertile people that have to heed all the warnings because they got pregnant on accident while on birth control and using a condom while the woman was actively on her flipping period or exclusively breastfeeding or some such utter BS.
These people will always disgust me and I will never understand them or their stupid ability to plan a pregnancy around a holiday or season 🙄
Every time I mention fertility issues to my boss (unfortunately I've had to disclose it for a bunch of reasons) she looks genuinely confused and says 'I had the opposite problem! I just looked at my husband and got pregnant! Two on mine were conceived while I was on the pill!'. So. Helpful.
Wow great addition to the conversation, I’m sure that made you feel so much better to learn of her non-struggle. People are so clueless
Ughh I hate people like that. Thanks for rubbing it in?? My partner told his aunt and uncle we were trying and they were like "what's that we never had to try. " like fuck right off please.
My friend, who is a year older than me (we’re late 30’s) got pregnant while on birth control right around when I was getting a D&C for a blighted ovum.
To her credit, she waited to tell me and called me to let me know.
Still, WTF universe?!
One of my best friends is pregnant, she had an IUD in which are 99.7% effective.
I’m still convinced that if I knew absolutely nothing I’d be pregnant but noooooo I had to go educate myself.
omg yeeesssssssss
Can we extend this to MDs too? I'm so sick of reading about "my doctor told me I was infertile as a teen/told me I'd have a hard time getting pregnant and oops I'm pregnant!"
Oh my fucking gosh YES. I am so tired of people who were told by their mom’s podiatrist that because of the endo (that they never had confirmed) or the PCOS diagnosis (because they had long cycles at age 14) trying to be some sort of beacon of infertility hope when they were never actually infertile to begin with. I get so irrationally angry over this.
told by their mom’s podiatrist
This gave me a genuine giggle.
Oh samesies. Just yesterday a gal in a endo group on FB found out all the bloating and stomach pain she was having WAS ACTUALLY BEING CAUSED BY A 21 WEEK OLD FETUS. Come the fuck on. "I've never used protection because my doctor told me I couldn't have kids, how did this happen??" Uhh, cause you had sex Sharon. No RE worth his salt would ever tell a patient they're 100% infertile, let a lone tell a teenager with endo that. Baghhh. So freaking stupid. /rant
What in the actual fuck?! I’ve seen TV shows where women didn’t know they were pregnant, but I just can’t believe it
Right?? I got insane nausea/vomiting at 4.5 weeks with my MC, knowing someone can make it to 21 weeks without even knowing they're pregnant makes me super jealous. Apparently her doctor first thought she had a tumor because her abdomen was rigid 🙄
Sameeeeeee.
I have the opposite problem. I brought up my irregular period to three different doctors, they told me "you don't have to bleed" and "just enjoy not having a period each month" and "you can still gey pregnant whenever you want".
I come from a hyper fertile family (sister has 3 kids and two were accidents, other sister tried for 2 months) and I have 7 siblings. I really did think that it would be immediate. But we found my husband has the fertility issues. It’s frustrating that people immediately assume that I am the problem! Had I chosen a different life partner, I would be the disgustingly fertile one.
I don't know, my Catholic RE teacher told us that natural family planning was a very effective method of contraception, which seems to be quite true for me at the moment!
