What to upgrade first?

I recently got an Oculus Rift S and am very happy with it. Having seen the Half-Life Alyx Trailer, I am pretty sure that I want to upgrade my PC, to enjoy the game in highest details as possible, and also to run Asgards Wrath on higher settings. I know no one really knows yet what the actual system requirements for HLA will be, especially for "high" graphics settings, but judging from my current system, what do you think will need an upgrade first?

  • Intel i5-7600K
  • EVGA GTX 1060 6GB
  • 16GB RAM DDR 4 3800MHz
  • Gigabyte Z270X-Gaming K5
  • Samsung Evo 970 M.2 NVMe 1TB

My budget is 400-600€. Do you think I should just get a new graphics card, a new CPU, or both? What options do I have? I guess GPU needs an upgrade first and I am eyeing the GTX 2060 or 2070 Super. Which options do I even have for CPU (without also having to change the mainboard)?

I have a 5700 XT which should be in the upper end of GPUs and still got frequent lag spikes on Asgard's Wrath on medium quality so that game might simply not be well optimized. I think upgrading the GPU in your case will make the biggest difference in general for VR gaming, not a lot of games are CPU-bound.

Thanks, will probably get a 5700XT, can you recommend a certain brand / model?

I don't know much about the different types, all I heard is that the blocky one with a single fan (also usually the cheapest) tends to overheat a lot. Avoid those that look like this

Payback will be better with the GPU, just hunt for deals during black friday / cyber monday to get the best you can afford.

Your CPU options are limited to i7-7700k, which is not a worthwhile upgrade. Besides 7600k has plenty juice left, keep it for another 1-2 years.

As for GPU, currently 5700XT is best value for you money at this price range. It's only few % behind 2070 Super and ~100€ cheaper.

Thanks, I will probably go for the 5700XT. For some reason I didn't really have the AMD cards on my radar, didn't know they were so much better price/performance-wise.

No problem, although avoid certain models: blower type (single fan), also Mech OC, Thicc II, Asus TUF and Evoke OC - they all have various issues.

I'd get a new GPU first. I'm running RTX 2080 with an ancient i5-3570, not even the 3570k, with 8GB of DDR3. I haven't played a game in flat@1080p or VR that's given me trouble on the highest settings.

Thanks, I was hoping that might be the case :)
