This really saddens me, and now I'm just plain pissed. Need to vent.

I don't smoke, my parents have security clearances and I currently live at home while I finish up school, so I respect their wishes. A lot of my age peers who I associate with have security clearances, and would give me endless shit for lighting up a joint. I got the "OMG I could lose my clearance!!" Most of them make pretty good money, love to throw social parties, and love getting their drink on. Don't get me started on their prescription drug abuse, whole other story. When I was looking for a roommate some of the candidates would ask if I "did anything" and the answer was almost always "no". They would start to ramble about how they loved to drink, blah blah, can't be around drugs, etc, they have a security clearance. I'm glad they were open about it. I don't want a roommate who "loves to drink" - been around enough alcoholics. However, a drug is a drug is a drug-right? Would it be in my right to piss and moan over these acquantances about their habit? I started giving my dad shit about the beer or two he would have at dinner because it was so hypocritical. It pisses me off that I can walk down the street and see people in bars drinking while I had to make the choice to give up something that would brand me as a criminal. It irks me to no end that people can stumble down the street after some debauchery and not worry about being harrassed, but the whiff of cannabis is enough to subject yourself to all sorts of harrassment. I don't know how much of this makes sense-I'm pretty sad about Prop 19 failing while something that is as damaging as alcohol is as welcomed and prevalent in our society (hell, people think I have a problem because I DON'T drink) and something as wonderful as cannabis is illegal.
