what is the current most recommended web programing language to learn for website creation today?

I am not new to web programing. However its been a while since I have done any web programing. All I have learned was HTML back in 2003 and Actionscript 2.0 in 2005. I am just looking to learn what else is out there and current to brush up on my skills.
