Why are almost all submissions downvoted so much?

I look at good links whether they be good topics for discussion or funny videos or pics and notice they are almost always 50% and sometimes even 75% downvoted... I don't think everything should be 100% positive but come on... why so much hate?!

PS: I love reddit! Maybe I'm just as negative.. if I don't personally care for a link I just refrain from voting. I have only actively 'hated' something and that usually offends me in some way.
