Half the youth vote that went Obama last election never showed up. As a Gen-X, I find myself fed up with this attitude.
Let me make a quick point here:
I'm 36 with kids. I'm the tail end of Generation X, and well, we're known as the 'forgotten generation,' because we even though we voted in high percentages, we were the smallest generation of Americans in a hundred years. We were too tiny to give a crap about. They still don't, really. They court the generation below us... who happens to be the children of the boomers, and is the biggest generation in American history.
... and now I find out they don't vote.
Seriously. What the hell?
We waited our whole young lives for this, we went, time and time again, to the ballot box, and guess what? We got nothing because the bigger generations in front of us.
We thought, finally, with 2008, with the younger generations, we could lock arms and push. They'll be with us. Thank goodness.
And you did. You blew the competition out of the water for Obama... by NINE MILLION VOTES. And here we are, after listening to a full two years of corporate sponsored hate:
We get nothing.
It's incredulous for us. We have a generation of people, like us, who think like us, who believe in same the things we do, who are fully capable of changing things...
... and they simply refuse to participate.
Seriously, this blows my mind.
After a lifetime of waiting, still, we're victimized by the stodginess of the old, and the whims of the fickle young. Your generation can fix this, you have to choose to want to.
