Don't become a part of someone else's stereotype.
We here on reddit have some unique and highly unpopular political views. Often, days like today, we are met with the cruel reality that other people do not hold the same values as we do. We want to change that.
Something I hear a lot here is a kind of disasterous apathy whereby someone who has become upset with the conservatives in this country or any group they disagree with, and they say "You can't change these people, you need to ignore them."
That kind of view is dangerous for a few reasons. If you ignore them, they will ignore you. The two groups will become more and more seperate and distinct over time, the divisions will only grow, and the differences will only become more drastic. Another reason is that by treating them as less of a person for their ideas, they will think of you as less of a person for yours. Disrespect breeds disrespect. Your interactions with people of opposing ideologies will shape their stereotype of their own opposition.
So, what we want to do if we want to destroy the negative sterotypes and baises that are preventing conversations from being civil and respectful, is to shatter those expectations from the start.
When you approach someone who said something you don't agree with, greet them with a handshake and a smile.
When you're talking with someone about ideas, never raise your voice or interuppt, and if they raise their voice or interrupt, don't shame them for it, smile and forgive them.
No matter what, don't let them have anything at all that will contribute negatively to their gut reaction about who you are. Take steps that will contribute positively to their reaction of you that they themselves can understand. Don't fault them for their ignorance and don't be afraid to correct simple mistakes, but if you do, do so from a position of extreme modesty. If the conversation seems to be a dead end, never become frustrated, but if you have to, end it with utmost patience and respect. Even if you can't convince them to change, if you were nice and respectful enough about it they won't shut out your ideas and maybe the next person will have better luck.
This is the only way we will promote the values we want to see in the world: by living them.
