Funny Testament to How Effed up the Child Support System is (has happy ending)
My Great Aunt died a few months ago. We're not too torn up about it, she lived 98 years, and though she had no children herself, she loved all the children in our family for 2 generations as if they were her own. In short, she had a good run.
After she died, it took quite a while to settle her estate. After we managed to turn all her assets liquid and put them into a single acount, we noticed a debit immediately popped up out of Greensboro, NC.
Apparently, according to some strange state-run collections agency in Greensboro, my deceased 98 year-old aunt with no children owed $1,900 in back child support, and a lein was placed on her estate.
Being as how she is not only deceased, but probably hadn't even been capable of child-rearing for the past 50 years, we were somewhat skeptical. This, in addition to the fact that she'd lived west of the Mississippi for the past 90+ years and it's very unlikely she could've hucked a child 1,000 miles west to the Carolinas like some unworldly super-shot-putter.
We did get it cleared up fairly quickly with the trust, but had we not noticed the charge (the account has a lot of entries, and it was definitely a possibility), I highly doubt the party making the claims would've fixed their mistake.
Update: My dad's apparently going to make a stink even though the charge was totally removed. I'll post back if anything interesting happens (doubt it).
