Fall golf & the frozen ground - tips/options for tees?

Recently I've had a few people asking about options or ideas for dealing with golf tees and rock-solid ground in the late fall/early winter. I'm in Virginia where it really isn't that much of an issue, and before that I was in Michigan where I only had a few weeks before frost became snow drifts so I'm at a loss as to how to answer these questions.

Other than a cordless drill in the golf bag, are there any options out there I should know about?
