/r/bicycling I'm looking for my first Triathlon bike

I am in the process of training for a triathlon next summer and wanted to ask the community for any advice when shopping for my first bike. This will be my first major bike purchase. I currently have a commuter bike that is fun to ride around town so I won't be doing anything else on this bike other than training. As it stands my budget is around $1400. My question is will this get a good enough triathlon bike? Or would I get more for my money if I went with a road bike? Also, is the difference in the two substantial enough to warrant the extra cash? Thanks.

Update: I bought a bike yesterday. I got a cannondale road bike. I went to a local bike shop and they were amazing, I had two employees spend nearly 3 hours with me finding the right bike, answering all my questions and then measuring/testing/fitting and tweaking my bike. I am really happy with the purchase and it was inside my budget. Having them help me was definitely worth it.
