Anti-Abortion question

I am Christian and I tend to claim the conservative side of politics. But the majority of the people I know who are God fearing republicans find it mandatory for their candidate to be anti-abortion. My question is, why does that even matter? Abortion in my eyes, is never going to become illegal and while I might not support abortion I do not have a problem voting for a candidate that does support it. Especially if that candidate is better qualified for the position.

so if you are like this please explain to me why it matters, because anyone can be anti-abortion, even they they are for abortion. Either way nothing will ever be overturned so why vote as if voting for that one issue is saving someones life?

I recognize I might be off base here, but if so please correct me, I can take it!
