Brian Dubie [R] concedes Vermont gubernatorial race to Peter Shumlin [D]

I realize this isn't earth-shattering news, but this is a huge victory for progressives. Shumlin has stated that his priorities include single-payer health care (and backed by a Democrat majority state senate, this is likely to go through), shutting down the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant (situated right on the banks of the Conn. River, which, if kept open, could have affected thousands in Mass. and Conn.), and legalizing and taxing marijuana, similar to CA Prop 19.

It was a tight race (came down to a difference of only 3,000 votes!) and after eight years of ineffective Republican governorship in Douglas, it looks like VT may actually live up to its sometimes exaggerated reputation as a heavily progressive, liberal state. VT led the way with civil unions; maybe now we can show the rest of America that the sky won't fall in a society with equal access to health care, controlled, taxable marijuana, and gay marriage.
