Is it wise to see my university doctor about getting a medical marijuana card?

I'm looking to get relief for a symptom that has been bothering me for about a year now, and the only thing I've found that helps is smoking. I could go to a clinic here in Montreal, or I could visit my university clinic. Do you guys think that I would be able to get a reference for a medical marijuana card from the doctor at my university clinic? Does my request present them with any legal ultimatums?
