Any Former D2 Players Feel This Way About WoW?
I've been thinking a lot lately about why I LOVED d2 weapons and armor and loathe WoW weapons and armor.
I think it has to do with a couple factors.
-
In d2 there weren't 40,000 different uniques. There were a few dozen. In WoW, there are so many purples you never even have a chance to remember about more than a handful of them (you probably remember the one's you have or will never have). The vast number of purples makes each one a little less memorable - they lose some of their notoriety.
-
Unique items in D2 had some kind of logical tie-in with it's name. For instance, the gloves lava gout had armor like most gloves but they also gave you some additional points into some fire skills. It made sense. In WoW, every purple does exactly the same thing every other similar type of purple does. Regardless of which piece of tanking gear I'm wearing I already know that every piece has:
Every piece is the same. That, to me, is the definition of boredom. I don't even bother inspecting other people's gear, because I already know what they have... That seems like a design failure.
- The chance for blues and purples to drop off of normal mobs is way too low (or is it even possible?). In D2, it was exciting because you knew that at any point something epic could drop from a Yeti or fetish. In WoW, you automatically know which instance and which boss you need to farm to get an item. It makes the rest of the game an intolerable boring grind at times.
What do you guys think?
tl;dr - you sorta have to read the post to comment. Sorry.
EDIT: Not like any solution I can come up with would ever be adopted by Blizzard, but why not get rid of glyphs and add skill bonuses to weapons. This way, Ick's Rotting Thumb (trinket) could have some kind of poison dmg buff, which would make sense given the items name and would also benefit rogue's with poison skills (and take the place of the associated glyph). Wishful thinking I guess... At this point, they know they've got a winning model and probably won't be changing it anytime soon. 5 years ago, maybe. Now? Probably not.
