Looking for a book about a boy who trains animals.

I am looking for a book I read some time in the 1980's about a boy who trained animals using a secret recipe treat. I specifically remember he had several animals that he had trained and a cat that he had started to train to do a back-flip. The he taught the cat to do progressively more and more of a back-flip ... until one day... and I never finished the book.
