are there alternative imaginary numbers?
This may be a silly question, I'm no mathematitian, but i'm curious..
sqrt(-1) doesn't really have a solution, but at some point someone came along and simply asserted 'yes it does' and called the solution i. this turned out to be a very useful assertion. I wonder are there any other equations that don't have solutions that could give rise to alternative imaginary units?
