Does anyone else REALLY (and I mean REALLY) wanna stop burning fossil fuels, but simply can't?

I mean, I am skeptic about CO2 induced global warming but I'm all for renewables and an end to wasting fuels. I mean; fuels took millions of years to develop. Even without the issue of environment or global warming, I'd be in favor of saving fossil fuels for whatever good purpose they may serve in the future. If only for the less than reasonable efficiency we derive from using fossil fuels I'd vote for a ban on fossil fuels.

But alas, no cigar. I am in sales and I need to drive a car. Other than he car, I use an electric stove and buy green electricity but I still use gas for the central heating & shower. I'm sure much of what I buy in the supermarket has been grown using fossil fuels (ever seen a video of a grain dryer?) and of course I use as much packaging and disposable items as the next guy, even though I try to mind the garbage I make and use. I really HATE garbage on the streets or images of the plastics in the oceans etcetera. So here's my question;

Aside from waste, my biggest guilt trip comes from driving a car (and standing in traffic jams) every day. I would like an alternative and I'm sure many others do too. But I think such a major shift should be facilitated and perhaps even mandatory. On the facilitating side of things my question would be; WHY is there no real alternative for a car that has the same traction / power but doesn't burn fossils or requires Nevada-strength sunshine 24/7? And please don't bring up hybrids... As far as I know, those things may pollute more during manufacturing than they actually reduce during usage.

PS: I'm Dutch and this is my first official post. I found Reddit throught the iPhone Appstore and got hooked. Great community! Keep up the good work.
