November book selection! David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas. [meta]
Since there were three books tied for first in the selection thread, PL and I decided that this would probably be the most interesting to read. I don't want to give anything away, but I'll tell people that 1. the first 25 or so pages are slow, but it really picks up towards the end of that first chunk and the book really picks up soon after that. 2. It's a novel in the form of a collection of short stories, but not in the way that The Martian Chronicles is. All the stories add up to something much larger than the whole in the end. 3. It is "postmodern literature", but not in a gratuitous way. 4. Spoilers really do suck for this, so I'll been enforcing the "spoiler tag" rules this time around. Don't post spoilers in the headlines or in a non-spoiler-tagged discussion thread.
Also, feel free to continue posting articles or thoughts on previous books read. We didn't get a lot of discussion on Anathem even thought (or perhaps because) there is so much to discuss, and I think having the book club build on top of previous books rather than forget about them once they're done would be good. Remember, we all have the shared context of this list of books, so making references to or points about previous read books in the context of new ones is welcome, as is simply posting about older books.
I'm really looking forward to discussing Cloud Atlas with people, and will post some stuff tonight after work or tomorrow.
