DAE get hot under the collar when they hear someone proudly exclaim "everything happens for a reason!"?
AKA. the "everything happens according to Gods plan" argument.
I love Bill Mahers response to this topic.
It seems like this statement always comes out of a rich white persons mouth. People that live in a fairytale world who don't have to struggle daily for survival like the majority of the world.
There is a number of reason why I cringe every time someone proudly exclaims this. Of course the number one reason is that its not true. But the secondary reason is that I think it gives people an excuse not to help out people in need. For example, why would we go to Darfur to help stop the genocide? Sure, women are having their breast cut off and then beng rode like donkeys. Sure it looks awful and horrendus and everything else, but its all part of Gods plan. We might not understand it, because Gods thinking is on a higher level than ours, but it is Gods plan. So why interfere in Darfur? I'll take it a step further. Why build hospitals? It seems awful having all these people suffer, but it was according to Gods plan that they got sick in the first place, so why interfere with that plan? If God wanted to, he could heal those sick people in an instant, right?
I think that the "everything happens for a reason" argument is one of the most sick, illogical, and arrogant things that one can exclaim.
Sorry for the rant. Comments and questions are welcome.
EDIT: Of course I know about cause and effect. I'm referring to when people use "everything happens for a reason" as in "everything happens as part of a giant cosmological plan that is playing out".
