Why do all states not have same-day registration?

I walked over to my voting place yesterday in Massachusetts and then realized that there was no same-day registration here. Should I have known that ahead of time? Probably. Do I still think its stupid? Yes. Considering the low turnout in this country, why can't I register on the same day as the vote?
