The preacher?

I had watched Firefly a long time ago and really liked it. I recently started watching it again. Did I somehow miss where it explains who the preacher actually is or his back story? I'm not sure if it was ever explained or if the series was cut before they go to it. In that case maybe the answer is in Serenity?
