Need your advice on a new hardwood floor installation.

Basically My wife and I are replacing the shit carpet we currently have with the locking laminate hardwood flooring. Carpet sits on concrete. Lowes is telling us we need a moisture pad along with transition pieces. Can anyone tell me if that is valid or is Lowes trying to make a sale of off our inexperience?
