Keyboard eating batteries

I have a MS wireless keyboard. It seems to have suddenly started eating batteries. It seems like it went months on one set. Now it seems like no more than a week or two. I can't imagine anything that could have changed. Was it just old batteries? Or is there something could have done/could do?
