Question for the tourney players about shuffling.

My younger brother has recently got it into his head thanks to his local MTG group that when you shuffle your deck, the "official tournament" way to do it is to put a land every 2 cards. So you end up drawing a land every 3rd turn. To my ancient ways, this seemed a little (a lot) like stacking the deck. So my question is, is this correct or are they doin' it wrong?
